Hand Made Dog Beds/ hot dogs?
Do your dogs seem to get really hot easily? I feel like my pup likes to sleep in the kitchen by the back door where the breeze comes in. He will lay in his dog bed for a bit, then move to the floor, and then tile, etc. Just wondering if yours do too and if its normal? He is pretty furry.
So i was thinking of sewing a dog bed (and cat bed to be fair) for the animals. What materials would you use that would be soft but not warm (not flannel or cotton), silk would be cool, but might get too warm? Also, what would you stuff it with?

Living in Florida it tends to be a bit warmer than other places. Stanlee starts in his bed, then moves half of his body off, and eventually goes to the bathroom vanity area where there is an air conditioning vent along the floorboard that shoots air straight out at him.
As far as material for a dog bed, I would use something for Archie that you would use for yourself. Why not use a good quality, 100% cotton bed sheet? My sheets stay cool during the summer but keep me warm in those winter weeks we suffer through. And as an added bonus, you already know they will hold up in the washing machine and dryer, too. A second idea would be denim, tough and durable.
As for stuffing them? I would probably use a polyfill stuffing sewed into some muslin so that you can take the cover on and off the insert with ease.
Would love to see the finished product!

Thanks for the suggestions! I like the idea of of stuffing it into something so the cover can be washed separately! I will post a pic if/when I ever accomplish this =)

I think the same thing about my puppy. He loves to sleep on the tile in my bathroom where it's cooler.
This might work for you and it was easy, especially if you sew, which I really don't. I took 2 bath towels together and put batting in the middle then sewed up the edges. Actually saw it on-line at Martha Stewart. You're also supposed to put 'ties' in the middle, like on a quilt, w/ a needle & embroidery floss or yarn, so the batting doesn't shift. I haven't done that part yet. I liked the idea because I can throw it in the wash and the towel doesn't seem to be too warm. It's holding up alright. It's currently in his crate.
As a side note: one of my kids saw it and thought it was for her! LOL So then she asked for one made for her out of pool towels-- we'll see, took me a while to finish the one for the dog :)

Love the removable case idea, Marnie-- I'll have to attempt that next. It'd have to be a SIMPLE closure though, or none at all, I think, because I'm not ready for zippers or buttons.... maybe ties? Holmes would LOVE that- I could use shoe laces :)

I think Trixie would like a bed stuffed with ice- LOL
She does not sleep on a dog bed ever. She will use a pillow when we watch TV. But prefers the tile in the basement.
She rests behind our basement toilet alot of the time during the day...Less now that it is harder for her to fit back there ;o
During the summer she will sleep in our bedroom under the open window...or on the AC vent - When she does that she covers it completely & lets no cool air out for us : (

I bet he will be an AC hog too.
In some of my old pictures you can see Trixie behind the toilet...She actually broke it once.

That's too funny!!! I'm glad my AC vents aren't on the floor because I could see Holmes doing that too.
