Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Recently some hard feelings erupted over a food debate.  Coming to this site for the first time many people do not "get" the passion of several of the members to educate others on "good" food.  I did not understand it at first either.  But from where I stand now, here are the facts:

- growing up all our family pets were fed Purina dog chow and they all lived to ripe old ages

- back then potentially dangerous ingredients from China that are now imported and used to manufacture food like Purina were not present

- there are people on this site that lost their beloved pets from tainted food made with said imports from China and others that are dealing with sick animals from kidney failure

- my 80lb dog eats 2.5 cups of good food per day, the recommended amount of Beneful for his size is 6 cups per day

- even at 2.5 times the price, my good food is a better bargain and I have a lot less "output" to deal with in my yard.

- my food is not being recalled every other month

- I am happy to support my national farmers and an ethical company that employs people within my country

Welcome back. Posting a blog is easy, just go to the area underneath the blogs where there is a button that says add a blog post and click. However,m Adina, the founder of the site, does need to pre-approve blogs before they are posted so it takes a while. At any rate, we are really a very friendly, informative and helpful group and we have all learned a great deal from one another. We also have a lot of fun at times.

Fun is right, I expect to be completely 'corrupted' next week by some of the members here!

OMD the Doodle Cruise is coming up!  I can't wait to hear about the shenanigans this year!  How cool is it that you are travelling all the way from Ireland to FLA to meet up with these renegades?

Yep, I can hardly believe it myself. I will be sure to take lots of pictures and notes along the way.

Thanks for coming back Beverly.  I am very glad you took time to read my discussion.  I hope what you take away from it is the "passion" that people feel about this and as you will see, other subjects (harnessing dogs in while travelling, puppy mills, rescue, to name a few).  I think that we generally do a good job about not making it personal, but words like "garbage" get thrown around.  If your animal has been adversely affected you want to make darn sure that you tell everyone you can in the plainest English possible.  Once you come to know us you will see we can be strong minded, but very supportive, well-informed and fun as well.

"Like"!!

Welcome back.  It sounds like you live in a lovely setting.  I hope you enjoy your move and have continue to live in a lovely place - just one with more access to things you might want. :-}

If you meant to say that you could not figure out how to post discussion  as opposed to a blog ...it is found on the left side of the main page under all the topics currently active.  Just click where it says  Add a Discussion.

Welcome back!

Thanks for the positive comments all and thanks for taking time to read.

I am very glad you decided to stay also Beverly, I have a feeling you will have much to add, as well as receive, from this blog. This is a very nice group and yes, we humans are a complicated bunch, aren't we? The food issue is an old one and as a matter of fact we just were talkng about this very thing earlier in the week and I said just about the same thing then, that you can't teach someone if they are not ready or willing to learn. And it wasn't intended for any one person in particular, just an observation. You did mention Blue buffalo which is a very good food, but there are so many others and the research on this topic is mind boggling. It makes perfect sense to wait until your move as well, if you are going to delve into this subject. And whether you change food or not, it's up to you and you will always be welcome. You will, however, hear many comments about poor grade foods, so please don't take it personally if one of the brands mentioned are what you are using or did use in the past. You can take what information you like and discard the rest, totally up to you. But to me any women who can survive living in rural Maine, is my type of woman!!! Welcome back.

Amen BG, for the first 9 mos of his life Quincy was fed junk (Purina Pro Plan)  on the recommendation of the "experts" at the pet store. I guess I was lucky in that there are worse foods  Luckily, I found DK and got a food education. The first ingredient in your pets food should not be corn. :<(
