Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Today Derby doodle started out with a loose stool in the a.m.
Then it managed to become loose stool with bright red blood
Her vet is only a few minutes away...so I ran her over there....he took X-rays, put her on ONE pill of DRONTAL if there was a parasite present. Being proactive, I guess...since fecal sample would take a few days..and 1pill twice a day of Metronidazole for 2 wks
and a probiotic...that I refused to take...I use Proviable DC b/c that's what Karen advised....
He was fine with that...he also put her on 4 cans of Hills Prescription diet I/d canned food....then I am Reading about Bailey on Chix & rice...which seems more wholesome & healthier
Are we on the right track...?? The radiology report came back clean

Sorry about the belly ache... :-( I hope  she feels better soon.... I  don't know much about the meds, but my vet also recommend Hills Science Prescription food for something. I always decline. I know I can give my dogs better food for whatever the reason is. If it is a belly ache, I can cook white fish & rice for them or give them Wellness Simple etc...

Kyoko, what is Wellness Simple?

It's an LID food listed in the Food group's Recommended brands.

Yes. One of the variety from the Wellness Brand. This "Simple" line has simple and limited ingredients, that should be easy on tummy.

My vets wouldn't even dream of offering that rubbish, they did it once but following my 'discussion' with them I doubt they will ever suggest it again LOL

Yikes, I knew it.....but gee you place this value on them as doctors & professionals...and besides this one is my friends son....and they just become marketers & salesman,..he kept in touch all thru the evening & really is a good guy, but why wouldn't he even suggest a more "organic" way to approach this...I guess I need to discuss with him...what I would prefer...this will be the 3 rd time I addressed the more holistic way to go for DerbyDoodle with him..,UGH!! ..kind of like when I take her to get a cut...sad to have to compare a Vet to a puppy salon
Thanks for your I thoughts on this. I will have "theTalk" with him
But just so I'm clear...boiled chix & rice is better for the tummy issues?! And pumpkin & sweet potato fits in where??

I know, it is hurtful to think that the vets are selling us these products that are made of crappy ingredients  Did you read this article?

http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/why-you...

We just had stomach issues..giardia..and we fed boiled chicken and sweet potatoes (instead of rice)

I just posted more of my concern on the food group page....it is very frustrating & upsetting!! I come from a huge family of physicians & find this very disconcerting....I hope this approach never gets to the MDs as well!! Thanks for your suggestion..DerbyDoodle did ok on the Hills last nite..she was problem free but I will switch to the chicken..why not the rice? And fresh baked sweets or is the canned variety ok??
Thanks again

I am not sure they know they are selling you crap.  They apparently get very little education on nutrition and the education that they do get is from the people that make the crap that is put in the vet clinics.  I love my vet - he goes the extra mile and is very reasonable with pricing and treatment, but when Gav was sick a few years  ago, my husband came home with a couple cans of the Rx junk.  I did Chicken and Rice instead.  He did ask me once what I was feeding and he said "whatever it is, keep doing what you are doing."

The rice is fine but sweet potato has more fiber ...which is needed.  I would use fresh because canned may have salt.  Just cut one into thick slices and microwave it until it is soft...remove peel and serve small pieces or mash it up.

Hope Derby Doodle is feeling better soon!

Oh what a great idea THANX!!

Yes, I prefer sweet potatoes to rice when homecooking, too, especially for dogs who are on grain-free diets.
