Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hey everyone.. i have a 7 month old Goldendoodle.. he is about 65 pounds now and is very wild..he jumps on everyone.. counter surfs.. and is VERY mouthy still!! i am contemplating getting an electric collar..set on VERY low just for in the house use.. when he is jumping up on people and nipping and things of that nature.. he goes to puppy classes has a trainer and gets several walks a day. this behavior is just not acceptable, as i cannot even have friends over the house. if i ever have a child he cannot be nipping and jumping like he is now.. he is in a teenage bratty stage i guess and is refusing to listen to me. anyways has anyone tried one of these collars? if so how did it work.. which did u use? and when will this behavior stop?? at what age?? thanks again

My Kona drools after a few seconds in front of her bowl :)  You'd think we starved them or something!  Don't get too mushy with him and feel sorry for him though, remember his sassy times.  We used to call Buddy the shark...  It's a really good think we decided on his name before he came home.

LOL we call midas shark too! hes like a snapping aligator!! its funny..but its really not lol.. we always saw we should have named him "dennis" like "dennis the mennace" lol yea midas get MORE then enough food..so the drooling must have been an act lol.. thats my problem like last night when i was making him do down stays for like 3 minutes i felt bad cuz i was sitting there like texting while i had him stay and every time i looked up at him he was staring into my soul and i felt so bad like maybe he didnt feel like doing the down stay.. but then he laid his head down and i was like aww good boy!! lol WHYY do i feel sorry for him..its those big brown eyes lol.. he doesnt feel sorry when hes snapping at my arms!! lol

That "staring into your soul" is called focus.  And focus is a GOOD thing!  I suspect you have a pretty smart boy on your hands.

That is exactly right, they are too smart for their own good!

thank you!!

Is he calmer after his down stays?  It might be a good time to get on the floor with him and start message or ttouch.  He will start to look at this as a reward too.  Remember it's not what HE feels like doing, it's what YOU want him to do.  They really do like things to do and training does mentally stimulate them and tire them out.

We always played a game with Buddy called "find", they have to sit and stay far away from the living or family room, and we would hide (easy finds the first couple of times) kibble of a different kind all over.  He get's released once we are through hiding, and he finds all the treats.  I even hide it on people, like their knee or foot while they are sitting on the couch :)  The kids might like that it you hide it on them.  He will be interacting with everyone then with a mind on finding and not biting.

oh thats fun!! i will try that!! yes he is calmer after..but if hes in his puppy crazy mode..i cant even get him to sit and stay.. maybe with a treat in hand i could..  that is the ttouch?

Ttouch, no food, just bonding, see the link below:

just looked at ur pics and they are adorable!!! does Kona have green eyes? so im guessing Buddy isnt a shark anymore? lol does that mean there is hope for Midas? lol..  I love the pics of the dogs on the beach..how do u guys keep them off lease and they dont run away? id love to be able to do that with Midas one day! :)

LOL, how she keeps them from running away is what we have been talking about here: TRAINING! It's not just about stopping them from biting, jumping, etc., it's about having a dog you can take anywhere, because you have complete control of them all the time, even off-leash. Getting to that level take s a LOT of work and a lot of practice, but if you really want to be able to do that with Midas one day, you can.

oh man i dont know if i will EVER be able too..at least i cant see it now lol.. with all the good advice im getting here, hopefully one day lol

Thank you!  Kona came to me with bright green eyes, and now they are hazel in the middle and golden around the edges.  I love trying to capture all the colors in her eyes.

No, Buddy is not a Shark anymore, but funny, he still does the air snapping when he gets excited for his ball or I'm going to throw a treat for him to catch.

Buddy is 7 and Kona is 5, they have been in obedience or some kind of training all their lives. I know not all people do this, or care to do this, but I enjoy spending time with them and watching them learn.  They are no longer puppies (thank gosh) and that helps so much too.  And, Buddy will still steal from the counters if I've stupidly left something within reach.  They will never be perfect, and neither will we.

For the offleash part, you absolutley need a reliable "come"  and mine don't wander too far from me, we are a pack.  I really think you would get a lot out of a good training class.  There is so much advice, but we all do things differently depending on our training preferences.  How is he with other dogs and people?  We have always done group classes with lot's of distrations.  The hardest part for Kona is when her "friends" she likes to play with walk in late and they are in a down/sit stay, she can hardly contain herself, but what a great distration!
