So, I go outside with the kiddos today and throw the tennis ball. Zeus excitedly runs after it, takes a nose dive at it, sniffs it, then races back to me – yes, without the ball. I tried repeatedly, to no avail. I know the ball is not too big to fit in his mouth because he carries it around inside the house and plays with it by himself. What can I do to show him he’s supposed to pick it up and bring it to me? At this point, I’d just be happy if he’d pick it up.

BTW, Hercules is not a good teacher on this. He’ll go get the ball for sure, but he won’t give it back.

Thanks, Sandy. I just tried that and he actually chased the ball, picked it up, and dropped it at my feet as he raced past me and landed back on his bed (yes, landed like a cat). It was so funny, and YES, I was completely amazed! He did it about 10 times, and the last time I threw it, he just sniffed it and ran back to his bed. Maybe some more fetch training in the house will condition him to do it outdoors, like it did for Hattie.

Umm, what are zoomies? I'm Googling the Orbee Planet Dog ball right now. Sounds interesting. Thanks again!

Gosh, Orbee makes a lot of toys and balls. Which one is it that Hattie likes and where'd you buy it?
Be thankful.  Shhhh, do not teach him to fetch.  You will have a shoulder you can no longer use,  yout fingers will be filled with constant slime, you will be brought balls that lay on your face as you sleep.  Your purpose in life is to throw a ball for now.  For ever more  :)  Honest
LMAO, Joanne! Yes, you had me rolling in the floor on that post. Zeus is not eating enough, so I was hoping the exercise would stimulate his appetite. Any other suggestions?
HA HA! Pretty funny
And Luca likes to rub tennis balls in dirt before he brings them back on occasion, yuck.

Myla LOVES her red ball but it's hers so she doesn't want to give it up-Chloe knows that's hers and she doesn't have the ambition to fight for it! I throw it in the yard she runs after it runs past me a few times stops about 3 feet from me and drops it looks back at me to the ball until I have to go get it to throw it. I wish she could at least drop it near me.

Chloe will run after a rope ball pick it up and then go lay with it!

So I guess you are not alone on this. Keep trying!

Oh my, Myla, Chloe, and Hercules have the same mindset. Once it's in his mouth, you might as well kiss it goodbye, or at least don't expect it back anytime soon without a fight. He will only let me take a stuffie out of his mouth if we're about to go outside - the only time, and only me.
Myla even takes her ball out with her in her mouth and goes pee and poop with it. I always say if you drop "in there" it's going in the trash!! Weirdo!!
LOL, too funny! That reminds me of when I took Hercules to the vet for constipation issues. After an x-ray, the vet asked if anyone lost a diamond stud earring. My cousin's girlfriend, who was with me, replied, "Yes, I did. How'd you know?" The vet said, "It's in Hercules' intestine, but I think it's about to work it's way out." She then manipulated him, the earring came out, and she asked if we wanted it back." I guess you know her answer to that. :-)
LOLOL! So that's what the zoomies are. Well, that's what Zeus just had a few minutes ago when we were playing ball. Poor Hercules was getting upset because he kept getting trampled on.
Sandy, do you have a picture of the ball? I want to make sure I order the Hattie-tested, mom-approved one.
