I was told by breeder that Chewy would get a shaggy coat. The more I read, the more it seems he has a smooth coat. Can anyone tell by looking at him? He's 10 weeks in these pictures. Would he be shaggy by now at 10 weeks?

I don't know, not sure how to tell since I am new to the doodle family, but goodness Chewy is adorable no matter what coat.

Lol I agree he's super cute! That's why we brought him home! I was just hoping for a shaggy coat when he's older. I just think the breeder was false with me. I think she was just trying to sell a puppy rather than find the perfect match. No matter, we love Chewy, I would like to know though if I was lied to.

10 weeks is early but I think  see hints of shagginess in his future. Cute puppy.

i agree, it looks like it will be shaggy. But what does it matter - he's adorable either way!

It is really hard to tell at 10 weeks old. Some dogs doodle out quicker than others. There are many that are 6-8 months before they really start to get shaggy. Some even a little longer. Then there are those that never really do. It looks like Chewy has some whispies, which is usually a good sign. Go to the "Pups to Adult Group" and look at some of the pictures there and you will get an idea of how long it takes some!  Regardless, he is a little cutie!

Too early to tell! But I would guess shaggy for sure--here are a few pics of pups I have raised at the age of 8 weeks and then the chocolate one is 6 months old and the cream one is one year old in the second picture--and they change a lot after one year too! I just groomed a GD who had a straight shaggy coat until now--he just had his first birthday and little curls are showing up all over! It is a surprise package!!

Thanks so much for all your help!!

He's a very cute puppy, but there's no way to tell at this point if he's going to be shaggy or not. I did notice from your page that he is what is called a "reverse" F1B, in that his doodle parent was bred back to a retriever. Most reputable breeders don't do that. In most cases, a doodle is bred back to a poodle to create F1Bs, which is also much more likely to create coats that don't shed and are "doodle-y" With three of his four grandparents being retrievers, there's a good chance that he won't get the usual doodle facial hair that gives them that shaggy look. The gene for "facial furnishings" is carried by poodles but not by retrievers. But he might. that's the thing with mixed breed dogs, there's a big variation in their appearance.

There's a group here on DK, "Where's the Poodle in my Doodle?", for members with doodles who look more retrieverish. You might take a look.

At any rate, Chewy is very cute; enjoy him!

Good call Karen--I didn't see the reverse F1B thing in her profile--that changes everything sometimes....

His name is Chewy like Chewbacca, I'm just hoping his name suites him as an adult lol!

It's hard to tell when they're so young, but Luna is a smooth-coated doodle and this is what she looked like at around 10 weeks.  I would say that Chewy will have a longer coat than Luna, since his hair is quite a bit longer than Luna's was (especially on Chewy's legs).  As Karen said, there are lots of pics of puppies with smooth coats in the "Where's the poodle in my doodle" group and many examples of puppy to adult pictures in the "Puppy to adult" group.
