Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Everyone has been great on this site so I decided to come here for some more help! I got my goldendoodle about 6 months ago. Her previous owners kept her shaved but I decided to let her grow some coat out for the winter. She did shed a little when I got her but it was totally manageable with a daily grooming. I enjoyed brushing her and she likes it even more! I thought ok so she sheds like a golden... Ill just have to stay on top of it. However the past month she has been shedding excessively. Like I have never seen a dog shed this bad. I just spent 20 mins brushing gobs and gobs of hair off of her and she barely touched me and my pants are litterally covered in hair. When i take her out of her kennel in the morning hair is just falling off of her! I have been brushing her 4-6 times a day... Basically every time I take her out to potty and its still this bad! She cant even cohabitate with us because the shedding is so bad my house becomes unliveable! Poor girl is stuck in the kitchen. I am going to switch her food to something specifically for coats and I am about to make an appointment with the vet! She doesn't look patchy (in fact she is quite fluffy from constant grooming) her hair is falling out evenly all over and she does have some dandruff. My husband is at his whits end because the hair everywhere is disgusting. I have bought 6 different brushes! Shedding blades, rakes and regular brushes but nothing is working! Could this be from being shaved her whole life or that she was previously an outside dog? Im hoping to just bear with it and she will go back to normal but it doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon.

TIA!

We are having the same issue. We brush all the time and just had her cut short hoping that would help. It is still bad. Seems like an odd time of year to shed?
Thanks so much and I will do the same.

Some dogs shed seasonally --I think labs, for example, shed twice a year-- my Mattie, who is a F1 labradoodle,  has a thinner coat but is practically naked now--she just went thru a shed and now it will thicken up again--not handy in the winter, but that is what she does!

I want to add something here--maybe you should shave her since you don't like the shedding--it would be kinder than keeping her in the kitchen---doodles are people dogs and being confined and separated from you is not good for them--get her a coat if you are worried about winter...she needs companionship!

Makes sense to me.
I would agree. Also, no food is going to help stop shedding. It sounds like she is blowing her coat. It has nothing to do with her being keep clipped in the past.
If the hair is that much of a problem, time to clip her.
I'm sure you could keep her at 1/2 inch or so, so she wouldn't be really shaved. I used to keep Stew long but now, every 3 months, I get him cut down to an inch because he has so much hair. Makes it easier to manage.
I think people have tried to give you good advice on how to make things better for all of you. I see absolutely no snide or underhanded remarks.

You can make sure that you are feeding a high quality food and using supplements like Evening Primrose oil to make sure you are doing all you can for your dog's coat and skin, but it is not going to change the shedding unless there is a dietary problem.

I had a lab mix that we kept 'shaved' so that the shedding was manageable.  He was not naked to the skin, just short like you might see on the short parts of a Springer Spaniel.  My rescue doodle, Clancy, is a major shedder. Our RV and our car have hair everywhere no matter how much I vacuum. Sigh.  I don't wear dark colors, I have mostly tile floors, and I wash fabrics as often as I can. My Christmas bedspreads are embarrassing covered in fur but I live with it simply because I am not going to shave my doodle; I like the fluff.  Now my lab mix - shaved his whole life and I was  a happy camper.  You need to decide what your priority is (and there is no wrong decision) - hairless clothes or a fluffy dog. It is totally up to you. What I wouldn't do is confine the dog to the kitchen.

I apologize if you saw anything " snide" in any of my posts. It only makes sense, if you don't like the constant shedding , then cut her down.

I think this member quit DK. I saw nothing rude in any of the comments either. Hopefully, she will take the good advice to heart!

Truly, i thought people were being helpful. Oh well.
