I just realized that my poor puppy has only had 2 bones in the 5 months I've had her and 3 bully sticks. Am I the meanest dog owner out there? How often do you guys give your dogs new bones or bully sticks or other treats like that?
I tend to reserve them for times when she is just drving me crazy and I can't take it anymore. I guess that doesn't happen that often...

they get a bully stick every two weeks or so. The can finish bully sticks pretty fast. I also give them a yak chews but take it away when its about 1/3 done and save it for later and then take it away when there is a small piece left to microwave for them at another time. I have about 5-6antlers that I alternate and give them at times when they are bored. So if you're asking about "new"... not that often. If you're asking when I give them special things to chew on... it's like almost every other day...so pretty often :D I can't help it! they are so darn cute!!!
Yeah Luna gets treats a lot - but they are usually things like fresh veggies or fruits and the occasional peanut butter or dog treat for training. She has very few "chew" toys but chews her antler at the same time every night.
Finnley gets marrow bones, the biggest ones I can find. I bake them, then rinse them after to get the slimy marrow out. She gets a new one about every week, to week and a half. If I want her to settle because I'm going to be busy, then I'll plan on a new one ahead of time, and put it in the fridge to keep till I'm ready. She also has a huge antler that she sometimes spends time chewing, then doesn't touch it again for a week or more. Her treats in between are sweet potato chips that I make. A special treat is cheese !
When Teddy was younger I used to give him bully sticks frequently because it took him a long time to finish one and it kept him busy. I also gave him lots of frozen kongs stuffed with banana and peanut butter or yogurt. Now he can finish a bully stick in 10-15 minutes so I only give them to him as a special treat every few months.
Luna gets an antler about every 2 years ;) We don't give her any other chew items.
She gets a marrow bone (marrow & meat removed) from grandma every 4 months or so, but that's it.
Lately...um...never. But mine are 7 and 3 years old. Although my hubby thinks the 3 y.o. is in need of some things to chew to get her energy out on stuff that isn't piles of wood and sticks.
We have "Bully Stick Sundays" at our house.
Bully Sticks seem to keep Murphy happy. And he has to work on it so he gets one or two a week. No bad effects from it.
Haley gets a fresh marrow bone with marrow removed every couple of weeks. It is his Sunday morning tradition. I put a sheet on the floor when the bone is fresh and he chews while DH and I read the Sunday news papers. Then the "fresh" bone goes in the refrigerator for next Sunday. He gets fresh veggies while I am preparing dinner. If fix a small amount of whatever veggie(s) for that night and DH gives them to him one at a time for some trick or the other. I bake a assortment of treats for him and he also gets Charlie Bears. He does have to earn everything.
I give my doodles bones and bully sticks every once in a while. I sometimes save for when I am grooming them to keep them occupied.
My dogs love bully sticks, but it takes them about an hour to completely chew one up, and they would have bleeding gums if they chewed on something that long. They need to eat all treats outdoors so they grab them at the door (same as with Frosty Paws) and go out on their beds. I put on the timer on the stove for 20 minutes and when it goes off I tell them to bring the bully sticks to me - which they do surprisingly. I put the unused portion in a ziplock bag and put it away with the dog food (they are smelly). Next day, another 20 minutes, and the third day they finish the bully stick. We do this maybe once every couple of weeks. Treats - always outside because they drool and it stains the carpet.
I buy the low odor very fat bully sticks that are a foot long. They last forever and he has several going at once-he alternates them. I always put one in his crate with a cream cheese Kong when I leave in the morning, along with a tie rope to chew. then his walker gives him a fresh Kong that I make up in the morning. He is still a puppy though, and a big chewer but the bully sticks keep him out of trouble.
