Howling in sleep

My doodle is almost 4 years old and just this last week at least 4 times in the middle of the night we have awoke to her howling/crying.  She wimpers in her sleep from time to time but this is a very loud powerful howl/cry and almost sounds painful!  It's never happened when she has been awake but I find it strange that it's happened several times the last week and has never happened before.  Anyone experience this??

Both mine shake, jitter, do running motions, cry, whimper and do a soft little "woof". But never a howl. That would be so scary. So gentle reassurance and loving is certainly in order I'd think.

Thanks for all the replies!  Meggie has always had little crys, twitches, moans etc......but this howling sounds so painful and scary!  She was under my bed (her fav place to sleep) last night at 4 am when it happened, I called her until' she came up and slept with us for the rest of the night.  I just hope she's okay, it's really strange....maybe a reocurring nightmare?
