"Human" names for Our Doodles

I just read in an article that many people are choosing 'people' names for their dogs now.  Years ago people chose "dog names" such as Rover, Rex, Blackie and Fido.  Now, the trend is for 'people' names.  The article stated the reason for this was because we are now thinking of our dogs more as family members than 'pets'.  So, did you give your dog a 'person name'?  With Tori, it was more of a word we chose because of the meaning of it.  Then we liked it even more because it sort of was like a play on words... Tori sounded like the then NY Yankee manager , Joe Torre.... So we didn't actually choose Tori because it was short for Victoria, but worked out in our favor since she NOW IS considered one of the family...A bit more hairier,  four legs, tail, and all!

Oliver is our doodles name, so I guess we did give him a people name, lol...When I held him for the first time, I just looked at his face and said, Oliver is his name...Our other dogs name is Renengade, he is an austrailian Shepherd, and my boys named him after the FSU mascot...

People names/nicknames for us -  not consciously, just happened. Lilly (actually Lilliput from Gulliver's Travels), Simon, Gordie (actually Flash Gordon), Ned, Clancy.

At first, I named my doodle "Adelaide" after the main female character of Guys and Dolls, but the name just didn't fit her personality so I renamed her Sunny within a few days.

 

My other dog is named Reba after Reba McIntyre. :)

I chose the name Duncan for my dood because his coloring looked like my coffee from Dunkin' Donuts but i wanted him to have a human name so i went with the other spelling. Not to mention I love anything Duncan Hines (mmmmm frosting!)....

But originally i was trying to pick an australian name....Darwin and Drover were my 2 top contenders until about 3 days before i got him.....I LOVE that there's a Darwin here at DK....now i need to see if there is a Drover anywhere...

If I ever get a girl doodle it'll probably be Daisy. My favorite grandmother's nickname was Dashing Daisy...

 

My cat was named Daryl after Daryl Strawberry. HAHA!

I have definitely heard of Darwin, but not a Drover.  That one didn't come up when I searched Australian names for Tori.. but then again she's a 'girl' so maybe I didn't notice... we were going to go with "Cobber" which means 'friend or mate'.. but I though it was too boyish, now with all this research maybe I'll have to think of another 'people' name for a "mate" - lol

Hey Fellow Night Owl...

I choose the name Sasha for several reasons...

I wanted a  " pretty" name with a Russian background...(part of my heritage)

So...after doing Much research...I came up with the name Sasha...which I Love!

It fits her perfectly!!

My brother Always says that Sasha thinks that she's a human!! 

I say...What do you mean "Thinks"!!  Lol...

Susan - I lover her name!  I have a bit of Russian in me too!  (My paternal grandfather was 1/2 Russian 1/2 Austrian)   But of course she is human!  Hope you set your brother straight!  LOL

My father was a chief of police and my brother is retired from the force.

We have a lot of others in that field too...as I think you do too...

I am trying to think of a good name for my puppy coming home soon. She'll be red, so I'm thinking some play off of the color. Probably won't be a human name, but I love human names for dogs! I was going to go with Penelope, but have changed my mind and am back on the hunt for the perfect name...

Garnet.  There are Rubys here on dk. Ruby is one of my all-time favorites. Our old MALE lab mix had Ruby as his middle name.  I don't think I have seen a Garnet  on dk.
