Is it safe to use on wound.  Astro got his tail bit by another dog.  I want to make sure it is clean...the wound that is.

Poor Astro. I would try some triple antibiotic cream on this once you get it clean. Keep a close eye on it for signs of infection.
Poor Astro!
Astro, we hope you feel better soon-whatever the treatment is.  TRUST NOBODY ASTRO!!! Get well-Chloe & Myla
I used peroxide on Clancy's foot when he hurt it.  At that time it was the only thing we could do for it (he wouldn't let us near the paw to do anything else). It cleaned it out and healed it enough that we could then treat it with antibiotic medicine.
Dog bites can be nasty so be sure to keep an eye on it and keep an antibiotic cream on it.  I read somewhere (Google) that hydrogen peroxide damages the cells.  Same thing Lisa said.  You might want to Google it and satisfy yourself by what you read...or give the vet a call.  Good Luck!
Poor Astro! I know that I always want to eat him up because he's so cute, but that dog didn't need to actually try!! Hope he heals fast!
I've been thinking about this. I think the only really safe wound flush we all could have on hand is normal saline , which you can buy over the counter. Since the pH and osmolality, forgive my French : ), are right for cells it will not cause any tissue damage while flushing out dirt and bacteria. Short of that plain old water will be fine. After the rinsing of a wound then something like triple antibiotic cream and exposure to the air should do. Of course if a wound is large, a trip to the vet is a good idea.
Someone at a pet store told me that putting hydrogen peroxide on a wound is a good idea, once to clean it. But if you continue to apply it to the wound,it will keep it open and prevent it from healing quickly... I don't have anything to back that up it's just what I was told. :-)
I would never believe anything I was told at a pet store.  The things they tell me about dog food is evidence enough that they don't know what they are talking about or it is what they have been told to say.  As far as the hydrogen peroxide, I was a user of it and recommended it for everything, but since reading about it I am now not so sure!!!  These kids that are hired in the pet stores really don't have any knowledge of the products or medical procedures.  I find this in electronics stores, i.e. Best Buy...every now and then you will find someone who knows their product but I find that I usually know more about it from Googling it than they do!!!!!  IMO

I agree with what you are saying, but this was at a specialty pet store/bakery that only sells top of the line food. Orijen, Acana, stuff like that. So they weren't like a petsmart employee pushing Nutro or anything. :-) She was saying that Hydrogen Peroxide is a good cleaner for the first couple of times on a wound, but if you continue to flush the wound with it, it will keep the wound open longer. Because it keeps pulling things up the surface and prevents clotting.

I just looked it up, here is the first link that described what she was saying.

Not saying it's true, just wanted to defend the employee. I'd like to think I've got enough smarts to avoid listening to a random kid who pushes Nutro or Iams. :-) She is a knowledgeable person who has always given me good food and treat information in the past.

Still, I think what I said above is good advice but I'm just extrapolating from what surgeons do .
F, I agree with your advice. :-)
