For the past week or so Oliver has had loose stools...He is eating fine, drinking well, playing and being totally himself. He is not running to go out more frequently, he is going poop once or twice a day, just loose. If I add pumpkin or rice he is fine, but when I stop he reverts back. He is not sick, or at least I don't think he is. He eats TOTW roasted fowl, and loves it. He has been on this for quite some time, no problem. As far as treats, he gets no grain ones, or an occasional dog biscuit, 1/2 of a small size one. I have been cutting treats way down. Don't think they really need them everytime they come in from going out. I do give a small piece of cheese occas. or a slice of apple or carrot, any suggestions...would be greatly appreciated...

I think some grain, flour based treats as well as fatty treats (pig ears) can be a problem.
Dori, she is the cutest puppy, I love looking at her, lol...I don't use those pig ear things or the white rawhide ones either. I am afraid of those that he could swallow too big of a pice, and it can stuck in the intestine....And YES it is a nightmare cleaning up from those loose stools...I clean up as best I can, and then fill a gallon jug with very hot water and put that over the area, ugh
I asked my vet about pig ears and rawhide chews as they seem to be a good use of animal byproducts to me. She said she has taken many things out of the stomachs of dogs (and cats) but never a rawhide chew or other animal products. Apparently even if they swallow bigger chunks that you think they could digest, they can digest natural animal products, although it does take a little longer for some things.
My vet actually told me the same thing.
My Oliver had loose stools for a day without any other symptoms. I added a little plain active culture yogurt to his food. It helped. He is on TOTW salmon. Maybe you could try that?
Plain lowfat yogurt definitely might help.
the salmon one was the first one I started with my Oliver when I started using TOTW, he was fine on it, just started smeeling too much like fish, lol, I swear when he was near us we smelled fish, that is why we switched to the roasted duck and rowl, and the smell had gone. I am going to try the yougurt, Thanks
apparently dogs can also have loose stools from chicken (fowl). If it isn't the treats, you may wish to look at his food. I feed Acana grasslands made by the same company as Orijen. It has made a world of difference to my doodle.
Cheryl,
Join some of us and make your own dog treats. In our home we make 3 different kinds! It is easy to make them in bulk and freeze them in baggies. Take a small baggie out as needed.
We have a few of our recipes in the DK Cookbook.
Another idea, Nina, Phil, and Harlow have opened a Dog Bakery and she makes treats to order. See her page for her new website and ordering information. We were fortunate to try some ( Thank You Nina), and they were delicious, said Starlit and Spud and Nina even named a cookie after Spud. Spudder Butters.

My neighbors are fighting acorns and GI problems. It is so difficult. I hope Oliver gets better soon
Thanks Joanne, I will try to find Nina's page and check out her treats. I will also try to find the cookbook for DK.
thanks Caitlin, I appreciate you sending me the sight, I went to it and there are some great recipes there...I am going to try some of them. Again ty so much...
