Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
This is really dumb and has nothing at all to do with doodles, dogs, pets of any kind. It has to do with me being an idiot.
I just hit my head, really hard. I wacked it against the corner of the cupboard door in the kitchen when I got up from putting the dog food in the bowl (ok, I knew I could tie in the doodles). anyway, it really hurts, it's like pulsating sharp pain. It hasn't stopped for about 30 minutes. The pain is spreading and I'm getting a headache and it hurts when I touch the spot. I've never hit my head this hard. I googled around for answers but it seems like there are a lot of internet forums with really stupid and unreliable advice. So, my question is, do I have a concussion or something or am I over reacting?
Am I supposed to go to bed and sleep it off or keep myself awake in case I never wake up and my doodles end up eating my dead body. I better show them where the kibble is just in case...
Sorry for the odd question but I tried calling a couple of people and nobody is around. i figure there are a bunch of nurses and moms on the site who might know if I should wait it out or go see a doctor ...
Also, I had just poured myself a glass of wine. Do I drink it to numb the pain or do I avoid it incase I'm about to have an anurysm (sp??) or stroke or something? Just wondering ...
...I'm leaning towards drinking the wine.

A couple of years ago I slipped on ice and fell and whacked my head. I was actually knocked out for a couple of minutes and when I "came to" my DH had called the ambulance. As it turns out I did not have a concussion, but the Doctors in the ER assured me over and over that it was a really good thing that I came in to be sure. A concussion is not something to fool around with. I would not drink the wine and I would not go to sleep. I know with questions like this you can call our ER and they will advise you on what to do. Please keep us posted....I wish I was closer. I'd have you in my car and we'd be heading for the ER or the 24 hour clinic.
Sherri, I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but, if the pain has continued, without lessening at all, for 30 minutes and is spreading, that would lead me to visit an ER or a doc-in-the-box--just to make sure you don't have a concussion.
You can also check webmd.com for concussion symptoms.
I hope some of our medically-oriented doodlers will respond soon!
Take care!
I don't know if you have it available but there are 24 hour nurse hotlines with some insurance plans here. Please let
us know how you are doing.
Sherri, I would not drink the wine, I would not go to sleep and if it hurts that bad I would go to the doctor. Heads injuries are no joke. Is there a knot? A cut? Sorry I am not a nurse but I have had a really nasty head injury from slipping on a wet marble floor...lots of blood, fell asleep, ended up in hospital getting staples in my head. Keep us posted.
I would skip the wine and stay awake for awhile. Check your pupils and make sure they are equally dilated. Put ice on it, and go to the doctor if it worsens. Oh, and don't take anything that might thin your blood..aleve, advil, aspirin, etc. Feel better!!
pupils are ok!
Sherri, this is your virtual mother speaking. Do not drink wine, do not go to sleep, do not pass go. Call the ER and ask if you should come in, or call a cab and just go.
thanks virtual mom! they said stsy home for now.
I am a L&D nurse....and always have been.
Unfortunately if you are not cramping or crowning, I can't help you LOL. As a mom though...I would put some ice on it. As long as there isn't any nausea, blurred vision and after taking tylenol your headache goes away. I would say you are safe to stay home.
I don't think if you called the ER they would give you any advise over the phone for liability reasons...Have someone check on you in a few hours to make sure you are OK... and stay away the wine for now....
And of course if you are worried go ahead and go to the ER.... Keep us posted!!
I am definitely not crowning. I think you were bang on. The ER told me exactly what you exptected and then gave me a number for a public health nurse.
the ice feels really good on it.
Sherri..... I did the exact same think a couple of years ago.... I saw stars.....it felt like the corner of the cabinet was sticking out of my head. I put ice on it.... took some asprin and took it easy. I had a lump the size of an egg and my head hurt for a week!!! I am real careful now with the cabinet doors being open. My friend fell and had a concussion ..... she was sick for a week, dizzy, throwing up, feeling sick... ER just x-rayed and told her to take it easy. I am in the medical business (organ & tissue transplant) and human bone is VERY hard and it take a lot to crack or fracture bone. I hope you feel better and if you feel your should get it checked out ...by all means please go to the ER. I hope you feel better :)
Sherri, I am a nurse on a neurosciences unit, which specializes in head traumas...
Like everyone has said do not drink the wine.. yes it will help numb the pain, but it is also a blood thinner. I would just try to stay awake for awhile. There is not much to do about a concussion so going to the ER will not help, they will most likely just monitor you. BUT if you start to get blurry vision, nausea, memory problems, numbness or tingling in arms, slurred speech, or feel like you can just not stay awake- call either a friend or ambulance and take yourself into the ER.
Hope the headache is ok! Take some Tylenol- not aspirin or ibuprofen... and it should get better!
