What was I thinking!  So, my girl is in her 7th week and now I'm getting nervous!  Gotta build that Whelping box and prepare!  I made a vet appointment to see how many pups she will be having.  I keep one, give one to her Stud, and the rest of the babies! Oh my! What to do with my babies babies??? Suggestions?

Hello Dina, since the pups are due in a week I want to give you some advice that might help you get them here safely, help you find good homes and to direct you to some useful information. I will send you a private message.

What has happened is actually the defination of a back yard breeder...one who has good intentions and lots of love but are usually a little misinformed. I am here to give you information, please feel free to ask questions. Our shared goal at this point is to see that your Lab and her babies are healthy and safe and that the puppies are placed in forever homes.

Fortunately, because they're "labradoodles" you might get lucky and place these puppies easily. Unfortunately, none of us will be able to send buyers to you. You're going to discover that your expenses for this litter far outweigh what you're going to get for your puppies, and that's assuming there are no problems, no emergency c-section, no puppy that needs help, nothing. The xray for head count will probably run somewhere around $100, depending upon where you live. 

 

DO NOT give them away for "free". If people don't have some kind of financial commitment to the puppy, it's very easy to walk away from said puppy when it's 6 months old and a pain in the rear. At least charge $150 or something for them They MUST go on a spay/neuter contract, or better yet, get them done before they even leave. If you decide to do that, it's going to come out of your pocket because it'll cost about $150/puppy to do. the next person might think like you did and decide to breed them. These are NOT breeding material puppies. 

 

Where do you live?

 

Aside from the whelping box which you have yet to deal with, what reading have you done? Do you know about the stages of labor yet? Taking her temperature twice per day? What about whelping, assisting in whelping, how to deal with a puppy with problem? Do you have oxytocin on hand? What other supplies do you have on hand? 

 

So you need to prepare. We can help you a little more if we know more specific details. What DAY is she on? Not week...but DAY of her pregnancy. 

 

There are a lot of puppies born in the world every day without the help of humans. The mortality rate of the mothers and puppies is also very high in those cases.

Dina - I really don't want to come across sounding harsh or unkind but this is what is called "backyard breeding".  Breeding is not to be entered into lightly and an educated buyer would not purchase a dog from you.  Was there rigorous health testing done on both of the parents?  Are you prepared to guarantee that none of these pups will have a genetic problem that was in the grandparents?  Would you be willing to "take back" a dog that an owner doesn't keep.  Do YOU know how to personality test.  Are you able to pay for all the shots and expenses that brand new puppies incur.  Are you paying for the males to be neutered?  Are you prepared and have a vet lined up in case of an emergency during delivery.  THIS is why we try to educate people to NOT  breed their dogs.  It is best left in the hands of a few, very experienced, dedicated breeders.  This is very sad.

Dina, Right now, you just need to get the best vet care for your beloved dog so she safely delivers all of her puppies. You have lots of breeders who replied and are willing to guide you through this process. I would pick one and let them help you. We all want the best outcome for all of you. Good luck!
