If they are letting you see the parents, is it still a puppy mill??

We are thinking of adding another doodle to the pack, a bernedoodle or a sheepadoodle. The only ones I can find are in the amish country. We called them and ask if they had shots and If if we can meet the parents. She said that they are both here for you to meet. We are going up there on the weekend to go see them. I looked up the breeder and I only found that breed of dog. So far I am think that they are not a puppy mill because they are being so open. Now, I know that all amish people who breed dogs don't have puppy mills but I still want t be safe.

I'm always suspicious of a breeder who is breeding multiple breeds of dogs....perhaps two or three at the most, but I generally stick to a breeder specializes in the breed I am looking for.

I personally would be uncomfortable with more than two.

But really, the single most important factor would be genetic health testing on the breeding dogs. If I were looking at a mix, I would check the recommended testing for each breed, and then ask to see proof that the parents had that testing at the appropriate ages.

If you read the link Laurie provided, all of this info is there, and it's invaluable for assessing any breeder. Here it is again. I cannot overemphasize how important it is that you follow these guidelines. http://www.doodlekisses.com/notes/What_To_Look_for_In_a_Breeder
