I have the same ones in 30 ft and 15 ft.

I concur with everyone on NO to the retractable leash.  We bought one and the mechanism to lock the leash broke, so we ended up having to hand pull Traz to us.  The long training leash works great at the beach because Traz can explore more area.  NOTE:  Make sure you stay aware of the placement of the long leash so it doesn't get tangled around your feet (or anyone else that might be with you), in case your dog decides to run after something AND that you let go of the excess leash, if he does, to prevent the leash burn.  Have fun :-)

To add to Karen's statement, if he's at all prone to bolting and catching you unaware, be sure you are holding the leash properly: Not looped around your hand several times so he drags you down if he surprises you, Not arm hanging down unaware.

Stick your right thumb through the leash handle loop.

Close your hand against it.

Put that hand against your belly firmly and hold it there.

If he surprises you, you won't get your shoulder pulled out =)  And since it's not wrapped and wrapped and wrapped around your hand, if you need to let go it's easy to just .. .let go.

(i.e. don't do this
