After having Neely to the vet after a suspected injestion of a foriegn body I got to worrying about what would happen if it had of been and expensive surgery ect that I may need to make that decision. So I asked my vet about his interactions with the insurance companyies. He said it wasn't good. They were now waiting for 2000 that was supposed to be payed out in four days. It has been over two weeks. So he said do your research. Which has been discussed alot here, but I havent heard about when people gets there money.
Can I get some feed back on this please.
Thank you
My vet said to be careful as they may decide to place a waiver on the dogas he has had a swallowing incident just needed drops, but they may say no gi issues covered. He had an ear infection. So they may say no ear nose throat issues covered. Multiple visits suggesting good vet care equals less major problems because we do preventative health care but they may say multiple visits unhealthy dog. So we need to read what is or could be excluded.
This is just a suggestion, it's what I decided to do when I looked into insurance:
I looked into insurance about 10 years ago when it started to get more exposure and popping up on our vet's office bulletin board. Compared then and compared again when we brought Hunter and Daisy home. We had 2 shepherd/husky mix girls for 13 years and went through constant skin allergies, being sprayed in the mouth by a skunk, emergency x-rays, spaying, and the unfortunate older years of arthritis, liver cancer, and pneumonia. I still have all their vet stuff - 13 years worth and was able to figure out what I spent in their care if I took the yearly costs (normal and emergency) and divided it by 12. What I got was LESS than what I was being quoted for coverage. So, what I decided to do is that I am taking what I was quoted for coverage of $46 a month - VPI's Superior Plan that I would have chose - times 2 for two dogs, and I opened a separate checking account for the dogs. So, every week, I transfer $30 into that account (about $120 a month). I use it ONLY for their vet visits. Now, with them being only 7 months old, I spent that money and then some for their shots and being spayed and neutered; however, now over a month has gone by with no vet visits and the money is banking back up. The thing is, if I don't use that money, it's there. It's in an account of mine and not in an insurance company's account. Again, this is just what I am doing. This account is totally seperate from my checking and savings, it has it's own debit card and checks. Most banks have a type of checking that is basic, no frills, non-interest bearing accounts with no minimum balance required. So, just a thought - so far, I'm happy with my decision to do it this way.
You have just said what my husband has been saying every time I reconsider getting pet insurance.... so far we have had 2 emergency room overnight stays and 2 ER visits. And every time we "visit" the ER we think it will not happen again.... HOPEFULLY - KNOCK WOODwe're done!
