Well...I finally got a sister for Bexter!  Her name is Maggie.  She is a year old F1 standard goldendoodle with apricot coloring!  She is the sweetest sister Bexter could ask for.  It is so cute the way they interact together!  They play nicely, but lay down and snuggle quietly too.  She is actually the most mellow dog I've ever seen in my whole life.  I feel like my doodle family is complete now!  As you can see, the kids are crazy about her too!

awesome story. it was meant to be :)

Congratulations....so exciting!

Traci, Maggie looks like a great addition, so gentle and sweet and I'm so happy for you all...the size thing won't even be thought about in a week or two.  Can you explain a little more about being her guardian.   What happens when she goes into 'heat' and how long will she be gone if she is being bred?  How many litters will she have and when will this all start?  I think it's quite a thing because you will have the added worry when she is gone for those periods of time and you will truly be her mama at that stage.  How far away is the breeder and can you visit her when she has her puppies...Lots of questions I know but I'm sure you have had to think all this through.  By the looks of things Maggie will be a wonderful Doodle Mom.

Nicky,

Your questions are all the same questions I've asked.  I have been considering this for, well...ever since I've had Bexter actually.  I knew I wanted another doodle, but DH said we really don't have the money to just buy another one from a breeder.  That was why I looked into either being a guardian (the dog is free other than its care of course) and/or a rescue doodle.  I ended up going this route because not only is the dog free, but it is health tested out the wazoo (being a breeding dog), whereas a rescue you never know what issues you'll deal with - behavior or health.  She will be gone for about 2 months to have pups.  She goes to the breeder's a week before she's due and then stays there with pups until weaned, which would be about an additional 7 weeks.  The breeder is close enough that I can go see them every weekend, and the breeder said I could visit as often as I'd like.  She'll call me when Maggie goes into labor, and I can be there for the birth.  I told her call me any time - day or night.  If I am on a school break (I'm a teacher), I could even see her & the pups more often than that.  We also will probably time our family vacations during that time she's gone as well.  The breeder will also keep Bexter for me while we go on vacation if we want (in her house with her dogs), so my two babies could even be together during that time.  You're right about it being hard on me...I know it will be, but I knew it going in, so I'm hoping that when the time comes, I can handle it.  She will have 3-4 litters and then she will be spayed & her ownership officially handed over to me.  Of course, how many litters and how often will depend on how delivery goes.

It sounds like you have thought this through completely and it sounds like a wonderful arrangement though not without it's challenges.  I am sure you will keep us all posted as Maggie progresses to becoming a Doodle mom and I look forward to hearing all about it.  Unfortunately we don't have any (what I call) proper breeders in Ireland yet (or not that I have found).  Riley's breeder in Scotland has some guardian homes for her dogs which she says works out very well.  They have to live within a certain distance of her which I am sure is the same for you.  If I lived near a good breeder then if I was considering a second doodle (and we have talked about it here) I would definitely consider the guardian home solution.  I can only wish you all the very best, I am so happy for yo.  Happy St Patrick's Day to you all X
