A million thanks for all the wonderful advice and kind words regarding my poor hurt girl. My daughter and I managed to get her up on my bed last night and there she slept without moving. This morning, she jumped off, very carefully, on her own and is not limping at all. She is very, very subdued and feels incredibly sorry for herself. I will wait a few more days and see how it goes and if no improvement, I will take her in. Once again, many thanks for such an outpouring of advice and care....You are all amazing and I am soooooooooo happy to have so many caring friends who understand the love and adoration I have for my furkids. Bless you all xxx
Whilst romping and playing this morning at the local dog park, one of the dogs was being attacked by another dog. The dog that was being attacked (a very large dog) was promptly picked up by it's owner because he/she was yelping and the other dog would not leave it alone. Anyway, my nosey, also extremely very large doodle, Frankie Girl, went over to investigate the scene and in the process got trod on by the man (6ft and very large) carrying the also very large dog. Frankie screamed out in pain because he unknowingly stepped on her left paw. Limping away and flopped down and gave us "the look". Now I am pretty sure there is nothing broken, but probably incredibly bruised. She is walking on it but sort of dragging it a little. I know any form of trauma to our feet is horrible and takes forever to heal. My question to my fellow doodlers is 1) Do you think I could give her a Motrin to take down the inflammation and 2) Should I rush her off to the vet or wait a few days???

NO MOTRIN!
Some types or Aspirin are also not safe.

Good link. In the Danger Group it goes!
No Motrin. I am not aware of any OTC human pain or anti-inflammatory drug that is safe for dogs, but I'm not an expert on that.
If that was my dog, I would be at the emergency vet, but that's just me, and I do not have insurance, either. If you do have insurance and/or can afford it, I'd take her, because if there is something causing her pain, you could save her 24 hours of discomfort or worse. But I'm sure the majority of people will probably say to wait and see how she is tomorrow.
Whew......Thanks Joanne....NO Motrin for my sad-faced Frankie. I guess just rest and natural healing is the way go go...I just feel so helpless.....and the worse part is I am a nurse, yet I have no idea on how to give my girl some comfort.....bummer....
My old Mastiff was prescribed a 75mg of aspirin a day, or a baby aspirin. He was HUGE. But this was a recommendation for pain from the vet. And that was a while ago. He was also old, and quailtiy of life and pain free was what we were trying to do. I would check into giving this to a young and otherwise healthy dog.
Really read this link and find out what the new information is on Aspirin and the dosages. Be careful.
Hope all is okay. Let us know.
I think it would be best to take her to the vet to get it checked out and to get some Rimadyl (carprofen).
If the vet isn't open until tomorrow, I would try to make an ice pack to put on her foot for about 5 or 10 minutes at a time. If you believe she really needs pain-killing meds, you could try _one dose_ of the low-dosage buffered aspirin (81 mg)--_not_ enteric coated (hard, candy-like coating).
I hope she feels better soon!
Thank you...I will start icing it. The hardest part is I am not sure if she is just exhausted from her romps at the dog park or lying around because of the pain or probably both. Anyway everything seems to say "no human medication" for our dogs, so I think I am going to stay with caution as I don't want to do more harm than good. If she is still limping tomorrow, I will take her in and post an update....Goodness gracious...I've heard of dogs getting hurt at dog parks by other dogs but NEVER by a darn human.....
Oh poor Frankie Girl. I'm really cautious so I wouldn't give human over the counter pain relievers to my guys without an okay from the Vet. Maybe tonight you could just try to keep her quiet, and in the morning if she's still uncomfortable call the Vet to see what they might advise. Here's hoping by tomorrow she'll be feeling much better....please keep us posted.
Thanks Jane. Goodness me...what a worry these furkids of ours are. Hope you are doing better after the ghastly time you have been through. I have been checking up on sweet Guinness and am sooooooo happy all is better. As I mentioned before, don't be too dismayed if another flair up comes sometime, but trust me, it will never, ever be as bad as the first and you, yourself are so much wiser on how to handle it. I promise to keep everyone posted on my wounded little soldier girl....
They certainly bring their share of worries....but so worth it. Thanks for the continued encouragement about Guinness. I know that there could be more episodes....just not for a LONG TIME. You're so right about the fact that I'll know so much more the next time. I'll be watching this post for you're updates....here's hoping a good night's rest is the answer!
My trainer gave us a handout of all these things that were bad for dogs and all of those human pain killer type pills were on it as far as I remember.
