Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi..I'm really frustrated and unsure of what to do. I've been asking to get a 2nd dog..a goldendoodle to be specific...for months. My husband decided to surprise me with one for xmas. However I have noticed a lot of shedding. When i went to breeder website it says a golden retriever was bred with a goldendoodle. So that makes this dog 75% retriever. Is this still considered a doodle? My husvand paid a lot of money and I feel he was cheated. This would not normally be sych a big deal except for the fact thst I have allergies, hence wanting a 2nd dog with no shed but withl the other wonderful qualities. I'm already in love with her but having a hard time letting go thst my husband paid for a "doodle" and that's not what he got. Do we have any recourse with the breeder? Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Elaine, how did you know the website?

That's what I was trying to figure out. Elaine, the website I posted was NOT the OP's Breeder....I just posted it for it's explanation on genetics.

I think that allergies COULD be bad with a shedding dog but not necessarily--the dog may not cause you to have an allergic reaction and a non-shedding one could--it depends on the type of allergy to dogs that you have. We had a discussion a while back about a customer buying a puppy I am raising who is allergic to the protein in the saliva, but Karen mentioned that it can be found in the dander too, right, Karen? And them a non-shedding dog would be a plus.

If you decide that you can not live with the current pup due to your allergies, I  think that if you tell the breeder that your husband made an error, she would be happy to re-home the dog, but I am not sure she would give you any or all of your money back--I sure hope you find a happy ending to this sad tale!

Yes, the proteins that cause the allergic reaction are the same and are in both the saliva and the dander.

Thank you everyone for the responses!  It is the dander that I'm allergic to.  I already own a german shepherd with major shed.  He had a friend over one evening and all that dander about did me in, which is reason number 1 for the doodle.  I will just have to figure something out concerning my allergies. Thank you Rosemary for the website that explains the genetics.   I have done a lot of research online and am not sure this breeder  (Shade Mountain Kennels) even actually understands the doodle concept.   However, I am attached to her, and the guilt of sending her back would kill me.  I agree with Lynda that my husband did zero research when he bought her, and unfortunately the breeder did not offer any help.  I just asked my husband how big she would get and he responded, "I don't know".  He said he told the breeder he wanted a small doodle so she picked the smallest in the liter!  O well, heart in the right place, mind... I don't know where!!

You are very welcome. Like you said, his heart was in the right place. Good luck with her! I'm glad you will be keeping her! What's her name?

Duchess.  My friend has a golden retriever and they love the breed so If I can handle the dander when she's bigger, all will be good!  She is certainly giving my shepherd a run during playtime.

Love it! Join the " puppy madness" group here....we all love and commiserate about our pups! And, lots of good info too!
