Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

It's been hot and humid here for the past few days.  We have a routine where unless it's pouring rain we take the two guys our for a walk through the woods or on our shaded, paved bike path.  On hot days we always try to do it before noon.  Today Murph totally refused to go for a walk.  He did not want to leave the air conditioning....so he was a little reluctant to even get into the car.  When we got to the bike path, he hesitated getting out of the car, but then we started to walk.  He was NOT HAPPY, and kept stopping dead in his tracks, refusing to move and trying to turn back towards the car.  As I gave him a "heel" command he would comply but would again just stop dead in his tracks.  The pavement was shaded, so I know it wasn't too hot for him.  Guinness was "good to go"...no problem there.  So because Murph was so miserable we decided to end our walk....he was ecstatic to get back into the air conditioned car and just go home where he could "veg out" by the air conditioning vents.  WTD?  Do others have wimpy Doodles who hate the heat so much they don't even want to go for their walks?

Murphy not so much. (Good thing here in New Orleans)

The second week I had Finnegan the temps soared into the 100's. The little black guy wanted nothing to do with outside. When I took him out, he went straight for the shade. The boys were building the deck and he found he could fit under it and it had shade (but no steps yet.)

Then, when he had enough, he disappeared. He had figured out the only way to get to the back porch (and closer to inside) up the stairs on the other side of the house. Pretty clever for an 8 wk old pup. But, again, he was motivated.

He also knows where every piece of tile is in my house. Apparently that is much cooler than hardwood floors.

Well Linda, you just disproved my theory that "wimpyness" has something to do with the name "Murphy".
Yep, Cooper is back to doing this too!  He would do this as a puppy and our neighbors would laugh at the puppy refusing to walk.  Now, he is doing it again and it is frustrating for me!  I want to get a good walk in and I can't take him.   He will walk part of the block then sit or lay down!    He has a shorter hair cut and that did seem to help a bit, but I do think he is very sensitive to temperatures.  He doesn't like to be outside when it is really cold either.
Yes! When I let Casey out she does her business and goes and lays under a tree or in the shade. We do our walks at night so it's not to hot.
Most definitely but still in 100 degrees she will attempt to be out 10 to 20 minutes.  Thats all her daddy will allow.  Just too darn hot!
I wish, Daisy won't come in....I have to DRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAg her butt in. Typically we get the hose out and soak her feet and back to cool her off. She does not care what the temp is outside cause that is where she wants to be.

Well I think he is communicated to you that is a good thing:)  Bandit tuckers out quick too and just last week had to be carried back from our walk downtown.  He too will stop dead in his tracks and lay down and not move... but I don't force him cuz I am afraid he will become overheated.

D&K still get excited for their walks, but after 1/2 mile (we do a grueling mile walk) they are really dragging.  Kirby especially has no tolerance for any warmer temps.
This happened once when Huff was a puppy. Then we did nightly walks when it was not too hot. But now he dosen't get walked outside much at all. He seems fine without walks now.
Not Brinkley!  He's a brute!  It's been 98 degrees here in Virginia Beach... and that hasn't stopped him.  I took him to play and had to stop him from running and shuffle him back into the car so he didn't overheat.  He just keeps going... and going... and going.  You get the idea!
Not my doodle. She's been out and about and sometimes she gets so hot I have to get her to settle down so I can give her some water. I usually cave before she does. She's wimpy in other areas though. Today she was scared off by some brightly coloured baloons. Sometimes it's fallen tree branches, pilons on the road, or garbage bins. She's also afraid of puddles. Also, sometimes at night she gets all freaked out over something that I can't see. I swear sometimes I think she sees dead deople. I get creeped out and have to take her back inside.
That's so funny....."she sees dead people".  I wonder?????
