I just rescued my 8 mos. old GD "Bailey" and just love him to death! I never knew these dogs can be so adorable and cute. I owned a Doberman for the past 12 years and I was not sure how I would be able to handle another puppy. This guy is so obedient and just a big clown. Unfortunately, this guys living situation was very bad. I believe he was forced to live outside or in filthy conditions because when we picked him up he STUNK. We gave him a bath and took him to the vet and once we were home we noticed he scratched a lot. We examined his skin and thought he had fleas...it turned out to be dog lice. How disgusting, we thought all of us and our house was going to be infested but fortunatley they only feed on dogs. I applied Frontline two days ago and I still see a couple of these critters on him today. Does anyone know how long the frontline takes to kill all of these critters?
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do regarding GD's beard after they drink water? My floors are always soaked. I have a towel under his water bowl.
My dogs had lice and you need to do the Frontline PLUS 21 days apart because that is the gestation period. We did a flea bath first to kill what was alive. Actually we took the dogs to be groomed and the groomer found the lice and bathed them then we followed up with the Frontline - 48 hours and three weeks later.
Some people shorten the beard some but I just live with dribbles - we have had soft-mouthed dogs forever so there is no trimming of their beards 'cause they don't have one. LOL I have found that our huge travel water dish helps some by keeping the ears from trailing in the water and adding to the dripping.
Alex, Maybe he is "mellow" because he is so HAPPY that you rescued him from the filth he was living with and just wants to prove what a good boy he is!! I am SO HAPPY for you and I LOVE that you called him a "Big Clown". We have one here too and he (Thomas) is a good big boy also.
I keep the beards short because I prefer the look and it does decrease the dribbling. But I have one who dribbles very little and one who dribbles a lot. Go know--they are all different. The traveling water bowl with a wide rim does help somewhat. Good luck with your doodle.
Thanks guys! Just wanted to give an update. We searched and searched and found no lice. YAY!!! We will def. do the Frontline again in 21 days to be safe, as Bailey has tons of those little lice eggs all over his hair...YUCK!
I think I'm getting used to the beard...hehehe.
Also, this guy is def. coming out of his shell. I took him to a friends farm and this guy was going crazy running around and rolling in the grass. I LOVE his little puppy bounce when he runs!
I can't believe how great these teddy bears are. We went to the Petco to get some toys and I was there for about an hour, everyone was asking what kind of dog he was and how cute they are.
Friendly tip...Costco has Frontline plus 3 month supply for about $32. I bought 2 packs.
