I am so shook up I can barely type. We were out on our a.m. walk when suddenly this dog got out of his yard and attacked JD. I had to drop his leash, he was trapped. JD put up a fight but he's handicapped by his ruptured disc, and he fell. The other dog was over him down on the ground, I was screaming and trying to kick the other dog, I don't even know exactly what happened, my brain just shut down and it's a blur, it all happened so fast, but the dog was off of him by the time the owners came out. I was mostly worried about JD's back and didn't even know he was bitten until we got home. He has a puncture wound with a tear under his eye (thank God he missed the eye itself) and a big scrape across the top of his head. We're just back from the ER. They cleaned it and gave me pain meds and antibiotics...just what he needs with his IBD. I may not give him the pain meds, but I have to give him the amoxicillin, which is certain to upset his stomach. And I have to apply warm compresses to the wound under his eye several times a day for a few days so it doesn't scab up too fast. I am so upset I'm shaking. That dog got out of that yard so fast and so easily, they may as well not even have had a fence.

Going to pick up his amoxicillin now. Poor JD.

Thank God.

The wounds look good, Karen.

I talked to the vet about that business of not wanting it to scab over too fast. He said that the bacteria in a dog bite wound is anaerobic and loves to grow in places that have no air, so you want the wound to heal slowly from the inside out. The warm compresses supposedly draw the bacteria (and something else, I forget what he said) out.  Does that make sense?

Yes for the most part. Anaerobes are always the worry in any kind of puncture but not all the bacteria in a bite are anaerobes. But think tetanus and nails, the rust has nothing to do with it but clostridium tetanus sores in the soil do. As to drawing things out, not sure that works but keeping the wound open to oxygen, giving antibiotics should all help. I hope the vet reassured you about Jack.

Kind of, lol. He feels there's no way around the oral antibiotics, but that we may be able to discontinue them in a day or two if he's healing properly. He had surgeries all day (called me in between them) but JD is going in for a B12 shot tomorrow so they'll look at it then.

Good.

Poor JD. It could have been worse though. I just hate how much this guy has to deal with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and his momma)

Thanks, Allyson.

Oh dear, seeing it just makes me sooooo much madder !!

OMGosh Karen I just saw these and I cannot believe how close it came to JD's eye.  It gives be a chill!  Thank goodness he is healing and no lingering side effects.  I am so sorry you and JD went through is horrible attack. I personally do not know how I would react.

Thanks, Lonnie.

Leave it to JD to just keep moving forward and not let this make him apprehensive on his walk. I'm glad he had a quiet tummy night. Did you use the pain meds?
