Hi, all. So Angel goes through periods where she sheds either not at all or fairly heavily. She is going through a stage where she's shedding heavily. I know it's due to a coat change, but I was wondering if anyone could give a guess as to how close to her adult coat her current coat looks...Do you reckon it'll get longer or thicker? She's 6 months now, and I've noticed a difference in her face already and on her back her waviness has flattened out a bit...Did anyone else's doodle look like Angel at 6 mos?

Thanks!

I would say that Angel has more of a retriever type hair coat that sheds. Dogs with hair coats typically "blow their coats" twice a year, usually spring and fall, to accomodate the change of seasons. So If Angel is shedding heavily now, my guess would be that this is not a "coat change" per se, but rather that she is blowing her summer coat and getting her heavier winter coat.
My guess would be that Angel may "doodle out" a bit over the next 6 months in terms of getting longer, thicker, more feathery fur around her face & legs, but I don't think her adult coat is going to be radically different from the way it is now, and she is probably always going to shed.
I know we hear a lot about "coat changes" between puppyhood & adulthood, but this has always been a mystery to me. Poodles and other non-shedding breeds such as Wheatens terriers do not shed their puppy coats. They simply get thicker coarser hair as they become adults. Dogs like GSDs and retrievers also simply get thicker and coarser as they mature.
I agree with Karen. I think Angel will resemble a retriever most of all with perhaps a few more whiskers and some whispy beard hairs. She will also probably always shed. She's beautiful...love her look!
That's good info, Karen! Thanks! I knew GRs shed, but I wasn't aware that they shed more heavily twice per year. Well if that's the case with Angel, I can definitely handle that. Like I said before, when she's not shedding she doesn't shed. Anyway, if her face gets fuzzier, well I'll be happy. If it doesn't...all the better to see her smile. ;)
My doodle doesn't look like Angel, but I kind of wish he did :-) I was hoping for a flatter more retriever coat but my guy is definitely curly. I can't help on shedding/coat type but I wanted to sat that I think she's really cool! Do you have any pics of her from the front so I can see her face better?
Sure, there are a bunch more on my page, but here's one that shows her smile... :0)

Thanks - she is so cute!
Angel is absolutely beautiful! I think I told you a while ago that she looks like my inlaws goldendoodle (who is also beautiful!). How much does she weigh now, Krista? She looks like a smaller standard.
Peri's coat is the complete opposite of Angel's. She is not shedding at all, but I am worried she is going to start to mat soon. Thus far, no matting. Even though Angel is a shedder, at least grooming won't be such an issue! That will save you money!
