I got my Doodle, Dugan, from a rescue in December and he is 3 years old and I have no information on his background. The other day I took Dugan to a lake to play ball and let him swim. We had been to this lake before and there had been geese with older babies present and Dugan never paid any attention to them, but this visit my sister was with me and her Maltese was bound and determined to catch a goose that was twice his size. They dogs swam after the geese and they got away from them except for one baby that got seperated from the others. Dugan caught the baby and had it in his mouth! I was in a panic, I know this is his natural instinct but, I didn't want him to kill the baby goose! Much to my amazment all I had to do was yell, "Dugan, LEAVE IT!" one time and Dugan released the goose and swam back to me and the baby returned to it's parents!!! I was so proud of him!
I wish I knew all the commands that he has been taught by his previous owner. I have discovered that he knows sit, shake, down, drop it and now leave it! I can't imagine why anyone would have gotten rid of such a great dog! I believe that he has been abused by a man in the past because he is very leary of men, but he is slowly learning to trust men. My Dugan Doodle is the BEST!!!

Way to go Dugan!! Good Boy!
Karen we are almost neighbors....I am in Evansville!
LOL, Gail, only 350 miles away!
I was refering to the Karen who posted this...she is in Vincennes, IN and I am in Evansville, IN. Only 1 hour away.
Oops! Forgot there were two Karens in this discussion, lol.
WOW we are close! Please let me know of any Doodle functions in Evansville. Dugan and I would love to meet other Doodles in our area, I have only seen one other Doodle in Vincennes!
I am told that there are some doodles in town but I have only run into 2 of them. I really want to try to get a doodle romp together. I have put the word out thru my vet and a groomer that I met who both said there were lots of doodles in town ...they could not give me names but said they would give my name and number to local doodle folks and tell them I would like to connect with them. As of now...no calls. I will keep trying. It would be so much fun to get a bunch of doodles and owners together.
Well count me in!!! I was going to drive to Indy to attend a Romp with Dugan, but something came up and we didn't make it, so a Romp in Evansville would be GREAT!!!
OMD...you should be proud of your guy! You must have been elated to see him release the baby and unharmed!!!
How can anyone just give up a dood like Dugan - blows my mind! I am so glad you adopted Dugan - he is very handsome and smart to boot!
Horray Dugan... Way to go!
I know how you feel. recently Holly and one of our Maltese killed a gopher. I shouted for Holly to drop it; not because I felt anything about a dead gopher but, because I didn't want Holly to have a dead rodent in her mouth. The "Leave it!" command that Holly learned in Therapy Dog Boot Camp worked wonders and she dropped her prize.
You have every right to be extremely proud of your dear boy!
