I read this article in DogTimes weekly and thought I'd share it. The thought of my doodle running away out of fear from fire works breaks my heart. I was thinkng of bringing her over to my cousins apartment where the fireworks on Canada Day (July1) can be watched from the rooftop garden. Now I'm having second thoughts about that. Lately she's been really jumpy at all kinds of noises, especially at night time, so I'm worried how she will react to the fireworks.

What are your experiences with doodles and fireworks?

I know that if I was the woman in the tornado story, I would be found wrapped around my doodle just the same. There is no way I will let her go.

OMG!

The other night we were sitting outside and Henry was just walking around and sniffing and BOOM a neighbor like 3 houses away set off three huge fireworks.  It FREAKED him out.  He darted up on the deck and ran right into the screen so hard to get in he got a bloody nose.  :(  The three next days he wouldn't chase his ball in the yard and looked really nervous.  I felt so bad.  I know with July 4th it's gonna be tough.  He's not normally like that so it caught me off guard.

Good news:  He was all over the yard tonight, chasing his ball and the fireflies.

Callie is not a fan of fireworks. (or thunderstorms). I bought her a thundershirt yesterday (a local pet store was offering a discount on them as a 4th of July promotion). We'll see how it goes, but I'm anticipating having a velcro dog for the next few days.

:)  Let us know if that thing works.  I saw them but didn't know if it would do any good.

Which pet store???
Cooper totally freaks out by loud noises.  I have tried to condition him with tapes, videos, etc. It hasn't worked for us.  He seems ok in the house, but he will not go outside to do his business when there are fireworks going off and some people in our neighborhood have started already.  :-(    I try to get him out before they get started at dusk.   Wish people wouldn't do that in a plat.  Not the safest thing anyway.   I don't want to drug him.    We will probably rent a movie and cuddle up on the couch on the 4th of July.
The first year we had Chloe we skipped the fireworks and shut all the windows, etc. she was whining and skiddish but ok, when they were over DH took her to go potty for the night since she didn't get to go earlier and when she got outside she wouldn't move tried to scratch out the door-neighbors literally next door shot some off on the patio. Now she's afraid of garbage trucks, nail guns in the neighborhood, etc. Myla sleeps through them once in awhile she will growl and go back to sleep. I would never take them to the fireworks. I plan on going this year and hopefeully they will be ok here by themselves.

I thought I'd "revive" this discussion for this 4th of July.

Please - let's all be careful and make sure our dogs are safe this long holiday weekend.

Good reminder!

Luna is super scared by fireworks - she slept with us until several hours after they were done on Canada Day.  I wouldn't dream of taking her out to see them in person.

Everyone stay safe, keep your doodles close and Happy 4th of July !

we live in a neighborhood with kids who have been setting off fireworks all week. Leo first came to us on Thursday and has been remarkably calm with all the noise. He is 12 1/2 weeks old now and the breeder must have trained him to be accustomed to loud noises. I'm hoping that continues throughout the night as the fireworks get louder and louder.
