Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I read this article in DogTimes weekly and thought I'd share it. The thought of my doodle running away out of fear from fire works breaks my heart. I was thinkng of bringing her over to my cousins apartment where the fireworks on Canada Day (July1) can be watched from the rooftop garden. Now I'm having second thoughts about that. Lately she's been really jumpy at all kinds of noises, especially at night time, so I'm worried how she will react to the fireworks.
What are your experiences with doodles and fireworks?
I know that if I was the woman in the tornado story, I would be found wrapped around my doodle just the same. There is no way I will let her go.

I could not click on the link that you posted but I will tell you, Jack thinks nothing of fireworks or thunder storms. I don't know if it is his personality or the fact that when he was a puppy I banged on pots and pans loudly and brought him out in thunder storms and I remained very calm when I did it.
Jack usually takes his cue from me, If I am calm he is calm, The loud noises don't even make him bat an eye. I have heard that one bad experience can change that but so far so good.
Jack and I as long as my health holds out, will do what we have done before. We will be on the lake with friends all day and fireworks out on the boat at night....
Rua's first night in her forever home was during a huge thunderstorm. 2AM I woke up to the sound and got up to go potty. Figured since I had to go, I would take Rua out. We went outside on leash and their were big huge rain PLOPs coming down and the sign of thunder...no big deal. No problems in the almost 9 months in between. Last Friday night the club house of the golf course we live on did their fireworks show. It is literally 5 blocks away. Right before it was going to start, I put Rua on her leash and went out front. Boom...it started. IT WAS LOUD and right in our faces. Let's just say it scared the sh*t out of her. She lost it...my DH had poo on his shirt, I had it on my dress and my leg, it was all over the front porch.
I held on tight and told her to tough it out. No big deal...just done noise. I became her "thundershirt" so to speak. She stopped shaking, but wasn't happy. We were sitting there and all of a sudden I see a black dog running on the other side of the street. FULL OUT RUN. He was being chased by his owner. Since Rua was not freaking, I brought her inside and put her in her kennel and took off up the block..barefoot...to see if I could held.
I found out it was my neighbor's son's dog and it was long gone. I was distraught and prayed like crazy. Fast forward to Saturday afternoon...found out the dog, a black 6 month old LABRADOODLE named Penny, was still missing. More distress and praying. Sunday afternoon, my neighbor came over and told me some found Penny out at a farm site. I was SO glad.
They were so lucky. They had Penny on a collar and a LEASH. She just pulled and ran. She didn't have her tags and was going to be spayed and microchipped THIS Friday.
I keep thinking and praying that Lucy (Jacquie's post Lost Doodle in Atlanta GA) is found safe and sound but I haven't heard anything on that yet.
We are experiencing random fireworks here and there. Rua is growling at them...better than being terrified...and if outside (I just took her out for her last potty)...doing her business but wanted to go back inside. I always put my hand through the leash handle and hold on where it connects. I don't want to take the chance that she runs on me. It isn't a matter of time she will run, just a matter of when.
ouch! expensive and painful. Poor Doodle!!!
I think I have my answer. I better stay home to see how she reacts first before taking her during fireworks. I need my knees intact!
