Are Chewie and Reed (cat) ever going to get along? Chewie chases the poor kitty and jumps on top of him. He is just trying to play, but the kitty is NOT interested. When the cat gets on the back of the couch Chewie jumps, barks and races in circles around the couch. It is really starting to get on my husband's nerves. Also the kitty is not declawed and Chewie does not take the not so subtle hints(hisses). Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks
My dog Cooper is used to cats. Our breeder had cats and we have 2 6 year old cats (Merry and Pippin) so when she came to us at 9 weeks old she was never a threat to the cats. She saw them as her litter mates and wanted to play. The cats kept their distance, but after a few days they sneaked up to Coopers crate to have a sniff at her. Cooper always wanted to play with the cats but they were having none of it. Pippin, the braver cat would swipe at Cooper if she came too close, though never caused any damage. Merry tends to hiss to tell Cooper to stay away. Most often these days Cooper is busy playing or running around and gets too close to a cat sat on a chair, and the cat will swipe at the dog (usually missing) and Cooper will be totally unaware of the cat.
I hope some day they will be friends (Cooper is now 8 months) but for now they tend to ignore each other, with the occasional sniff at each other. I can tell though, that Cooper would love to have the cats company!
I am considering getting another cat in the future - maybe a kitten who grows up with dogs will be happier to snuggle with a dog. But that is many months down the line and still just a possibility
Those pictures are sooo cute. The first one IMG 2219.JPG looks exactly like my Reed (kitty). Maybe I will show him the picture and he will get the idea that it really is OK !!! Thanks !!
We have 4 cats, 2 of which are small kittens. Delilah has learned to get along with the bigger cats and almost never chases them now. She does chase the kittens a lot but hopefully over time that will stop too. All of my cats aren't declawed either. Delilah will get swatted at once by the cats and she backs off. They even sleep together sometimes!
