My son and his new wife have bought a house, and it is laminate flooring throughout. Toby will not get off the mat at the back door. He gets so nervous he emits "anal gland" scents - which clear a room - and his lips twitch. He won't come off the mat for a treat, or to come see us if we're in another room, or if left alone. We have not forced it - we thought he'd see the light and just walk already, but no. My son and his wife are dog lovers, and have a dog that Toby loves, but he won't get off to be with it either. This was my hope of going away overnight - that they would take Toby for us, and they gladly would, but like a fool, he won't walk on their floors. I'm feeling frustrated, and starting to think that this dog is running my life! Help.....anyone.

Oh, no... poor Toby!! I hope the runner rugs will work for him!
He needs a magic carpet! poor boy, must be terrified. Maybe plastic runners that you buy off the big roll in Home Depot might work. buy a small length first to see if he will walk on it and then a longer one if he will.
You know what? He IS terrified. His lips were quivering - never seen that before in a dog - and he was having some noxious gas. Room clearing gas. My almost daughter-in-law is a vet tech, so she has seen these things before.
He needs time. When we first moved into our house, Taquito would not leave the kitchen (ceramic tiles) - he didn't want to go on the hardwoods. It just took a few days. I coerced him with treats. I think it will just simply get better.
How is Toby doing? Hope he is feeling more comfortable
Only two rooms in our house have laminate, one being the living room and we have a large area rug and Libby has no problems on the laminate or siding due to the rug. The other room is a bedroom and we do not allow her to go in there (sad, I know) because she gets up on a very high bed and when she jumps down she slides so bad it scares us. Sometimes her legs spread apart or she falls and we are sure she is going to mess up her hips or break a leg. I know, we could train her not to go on the bed, but it is a spare bedroom and anyone that uses it knows to keep the door closed.
I don't think there's anything wrong with there being a room or two that is off-limits to the dog, as long as it isn't your room, lol.
Definitely not our room Karen, she sleeps with us and we love it! She is on our feet or very close by us every night and I would not have it any other way. My adult kids remind me all the time what I said when Libby joined our family! "Libby will never sleep in our bed, she sleeps in the crate"! Things change:)
