Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd be asking THIS question....hahaha...what, if anything, can I give my "Coco" to reduce/eliminate the AWFUL smell of his flatulence/gas and/or poop??? The gas is most times the worst.... I call them the 'green mistys', cuz they almost make my eyes water...hahaha Is there a supplement to give....or a particular food to avoid? An herb to add to food (parsley in humans reduces bad breath).....HELP!!

Nicky-same thing happened with ours for a bit when we switched to Orijen, I told DH something has to give or we have to stop feeding it. Chloe was B-A-D!!! Myla proudly burps after eating and throughout the evening!
You have me laughing Nicky! Riley knows when he has a "captive audience!"

I adopted a kitten years ago that had the worst of all smelling gas. My vet suggested giving him a little plain yogurt or buttermilk daily. Ollie got his buttermilk everyday for his entire life and if he passsed gas we never smelled anything.
Raw stopped my kitten from having bad gas! I love raw, but it isnt for everyone
i like prozyme - digestive enzymes, but I just read your post in the food group and replied. I will replicate my post here so more people see it, especially those feeding grocery store brands like you vare
Assuming you are feeding pedigree puppy, this is the ingredient list
RICE, GROUND YELLOW CORN, WHEAT, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, MEAT AND BONE MEAL, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, WHEAT MILL RUN, ANIMAL FAT (PRESERVED WITH BHA/ BHT), BEET PULP POWDER, NATURAL POULTRY FLAVOUR, WHEAT FLOUR, VEGETABLE OIL (SOURCE OF OMEGA 6 FATTY ACIDS*), SALT, POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, FISH OIL (SOURCE OF DHA*), VITAMINS (dl-ALPHA TOCOPHEROL ACETATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN E], CHOLINE CHLORIDE, L-ASCORBYL-2-POLYPHOSPHATE [SOURCE OF VITAMIN C*], VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENT, THIAMINE MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], d-CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, BIOTIN SUPPLEMENT, RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT [VITAMIN B2], VITAMIN D3 SUPPLEMENT, VITAMIN B12 SUPPLEMENT),TAURINE*, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE, TRACE MINERALS (ZINC SULFATE, COPPER SULFATE, POTASSIUM IODIDE), IRON OXIDE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, MARIGOLD MEAL (SOURCE OF LUTEIN*).
Anything before the fat is a main ingredient. As you can see, there is not whole meat (only byproducts which is often heads, feet, beaks, etc not the quality meat we would eat). There is also alot of corn and wheat, which are just fillers.
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ is an unbiased list of ingredients to avoid and to look for in foods - it doesnt recomend a brand of food, just teaches you about pet food. its a fantastic source of information
Pedigree is cheap per bag, whereas high qulailty food is expensive per bag. However, you feed much less of the high quality foods so per meal it often works out cheaper
eg if fed my dog (60lb adult) pedigree, i would feed 5 1/2 cups a day according to their guidelines.
If i fed my dog Orijen, i would feed 2 cups a day. A 15 lb bag lasts me just over a month, which works out about $1 a day
Looking at the price of pedigree on http://www.petfooddirect.com it is about half the price of Orijen for similar size bag ($22 for 16lb as opposed to $38 for 15lb). I would feed almost 3 times the amount of pedigree than Orijen. So feeding pedigree would cost me over $60 a month whereas orijen would cost me less than $40 month
orijen is 1,000 times a better quality food, and it will show in your pets health (and reduce vet bills). Poop will be less, and you will have a less stinky dog!
It would be hard to find a poorer list of ingredients in any food than this. If anything would give a dog gas, this would be it. And the use of BHT and BHA alone is extremely troubling; check the Dog Food Project link Kaytlin provided for information on these preservatives, which are believed to be carcinogenic. I'd get her off this food ASAP.
But poop smells, lol. Our poop smells, too. And dogs get gas just like people, even on the best diet. Certain odors are part of life with dogs. You'll adjust. Puppies digestive systems are immature. Age, a better quality diet, and possibly some probiotics should help.
I have never had occasion to look up the ingredient list for Pedigree, but, OMG, that is one atrocious list!
Kaytlin, you make the case for higher-quality food very well--comparing the cups per day. Not only is a better food nutritionally healthier, it is also more cost-effective!
Cosmo has been on Orijen his whole life, and we believe it is worth every penny!
