Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I believe that here at DoodleKisses most of us support responsible breeding and rescue.  There have been posts both here and other forums by people not adhering to responsible breeding standards asking questions or advising of a litter.  They then get offended when they are questioned or told that there are those of us that are offended by their actions.

Please let us all take a stand to only to support responsible breeding and rescue!!!!

That is good to know and it also tells us that some people do want to learn - or will learn if they want to sell their dogs to a more enlightened consumer. I know that when I do get another doodle, I will chose from the breeders who have actively and generously shared their experience and knowledge with us. What goes around comes around.
Adina, would the former rat breeder who wants to know how much to charge for bordoodles from untested parents have been allowed in the group? That's the kind of thing that's being addressed in this discussion, I think.
They should be allowed to join, and when they do they will be educated on proper breeding practises like health testing and determining IF they would be able to place to puppies successfully (and if not? shouldn't breed), and if they disagree we could then unjoin them. Everyone starts our nieve and then has to find a mentor and do research to become an educated responsible breeder. The best way to promote that is to send them to established breeders who have a vested interest in promoting responsible breeding and producing healthy puppies. BYB's that don't follow these practises make us all look bad and we have a vested interest in discouraging them, and/or educating them.
I think such a group would only attract more dubious people (that's the kindest way I can put it) to DK, and I for one do not appreciate their being here. I am very proud of the fact that DK's membership includes some of the most intelligent and responsible owners and breeders of any doodle related site out there. The doodles who end up in rescue usually do so because of irresponsible breeders and ignorant buyers, and Adina has worked hard to help eliminate both from this site, and to educate those who want to learn. The information is all here for those who care enough to look for it.
There are other sites where anything goes and frankly, it makes some of us sick to read the discussions there. I don't want to see more of that here... that's what Andy means when he refers to "those of us who are offended by their actions."
I think that if it comes down to a choice between offending somebody who comes here mainly for financial gain and doesn't bother to read any of the information that Adina & others have spent countless hours providing, or offending long-time members & friends who try to make a positive contribution to our community, there really shouldn't be any debate as to whose sensibilities should take priority.
That is what our Breeders group is for (in part). If someone is just tossing around the idea of breeding then we (I, you_ etc) can refer them to a few breeders on this site to whom they can talk to more extensively.
Perhaps there could be an area or subgroup that would-be breeders could join to ask questions and find out the plausibility of their breeding hopes and what it takes. Since members at large cannot join the breeders group, that would "contain" them so to speak. They can be encouraged or discouraged depending on the circumstances. After all anyone can join DK, including the worst breeder, and unless there is a problem with them they coexist with the rest of us. It seems odd that lately there have been several brand new members seeking advice or almost asking permission to breed strange mixes.
If anyone knows me well they know I am not afraid of speaking my mind. I am not sugary sweet and do not sugar coat messages. I usually am very open and direct when I suspect bad breeding.

I do not camp out on DK so I am missing the people you are referring too. I would love to catch up, can you send me a private message to show me the problems.
Even those of us who don't know you know that and appreciate it : )
I personally have no desire to breed puppies (my kids keep me busy enough!), but I do think that if I was going to start I would be afraid to share it anywhere for fear of getting attacked. I think that there ought to be a civilized way for responsible people to learn about breeding and obtain high quality breeding dogs. Here is an interesting article:

http://doglawsatlarge.blogspot.com/2007/12/pet-puppies-and-show-bre...

I don't agree with quite a few points that the article is making, but I also think that it is important to read the opinion of the "other side".

Oh, lastly, I don't know anything about this blog. I got the link from another website and only have read this one article, so please don't think I am condoning or condemning this blog.
Leslie, this is not a portrayal of "the other side." This is a group of large commercial breeders (including many puppy mills) who are fighting any laws that try to regulate numbers of dogs and the conditions in which they are kept. To support the writer of this blog and promote these ideas is to support cruelty to animals and puppy mills.
I realize you didn't know that.
Thanks Karen- I had no idea.
Someone who wants to start breeding should have a mentor, as has been mentioned by the breeders here. If they go about it in the right way, who would attack them?
I don't know what the percentage of breeders is among the total membership of DK, but I'd bet it's less than 5%. This is a social forum. Why should people who are interested in becoming breeders start discussions in the open forum asking you and I how to go about it? Why wouldn't they ask the people who know about it, i.e. established breeders? The main forum here is not the appropriate place to "learn about breeding", and you will find that those who do this are NOT responsible people. That's why they're afraid to approach legitimate breeders in breeders' forums.
