My poor little girl broke her leg last night jumping at the baby gate. She must have fallen on it strangely or something because one minute it was paws over the gate, barking with excitement and the next she was on the ground and yelping. We took her to the emergency clinic right away and they took some X-Rays and 8 hours later we have her home in a pink fiberglass cast with purple hearts glued on by the technician.
Tomorrow she has to go in for surgery and a recasting at our home vet. My girl is zonked out in her crate right now with pain medication and all cuddled up in her blankets.
I don't even know how to begin to handle this! I know we will get more information tomorrow at the vet but I'm worrying about how we're going to help her go to the bathroom, eat, manage her pain... everything! She's only 13 weeks old and I feel just terrible that she has to go through this. I'm worn out from the vet visit and I just want her to be okay. I know she will be fine eventually but I feel awful for her.
Does anyone have any experience with broken bones in pets? And advice, support... anything... would be greatly appreciated!!!
I have had 2 pet families end up with puppies breaking legs.
The first was 5 years ago and they were driving with the windows down and their 5 month old pup jumped out the window! Good thing he had his leash on~ dad pulled him back in... he had 2 broken legs. Now over 5 years old he is just fine.
Recent litter, puppy jumped off deck and broke a leg.
You will likely have to go to the vet every week to get a new cast and the vet will monitor healing and growth. As long as it is not near a growth plate your puppy should be fine.
She will need to continue socialization but should probably stop any type of formal training. Socialization at this age is very important so dont let this be an albatross... get her out there and dont carry her unless she cant make the walk but as soon as it is time to greet dogs or people put him down where she would normally be (on the ground!).
Going potty and eating will come naturally for her, I asume metacam was given as a pain med, it is great...
So Sorry to hear about Lily. Never thought a baby gate could cause such a tragic accident with a dog, we have used them all the time also, along with crate training. Lots of prayers and will be thinking of Lily all day with her surgery, please let us know what your vet has to say and how Lily is doing. You really did the best you could by getting her to the emergency Vet. Dog's just like kids have a way of dealing with pain and amazingly they bounce back so quickly, you might even find yourself trying to keep her from chewing the cast, If she does try taking kids socks and putting them over the cast. I wouldn't stop taking her outsdie to potty, don't want to break her habits that way, but I would limit her activity with other people for now, just so she does not cause re-injury to herself, and if she has freedom of the yard, keep her on a leash till she is healed. If you have her in obedience classes, talk with your trainer and they should let you re-start where you left off or offer an alternative. Your Vet can help with the pain management. We will be thinking about you's with lots of prayers...please keep us all posted on Lily's progress.... glitter-graphics.com
Hang in there. From what I've seen on animal planet, it is amazing how well pups do and how normal they act in spite of the cast. It will probably break your heart to see her drugged right now. But as soon as surgery is over and she has recovered from that she will probably play, walk, everything normal, except she has to drag that cast around. So keep your chin up. I had a puppy as a child do the same. After the initial week, it was like it never happened. Also that dog never developed arthritis or anything like that in old age.
So sorry for you guys, no experience with broken bones here either...just a few twists and sprains. Just wanted to say we're sending loads of good wishes and will be thinking of you!

So sorry to hear about the puppy. It is scary how fragile we all can be. I don't have any good advice to offer only wishes for a speedy recovery. It does remind me to look int pet health insurance.
Oh, no! I hope Lily is feeling better soon. Hopefully you'll find out more today about how to help her, but it sounds like you've already gotten some good advice here. She'll probably adjust to the cast really quickly.
Poor Lily! I can't even imagine going through this. Out thoughts and best wishes are with you both! We wish Lily a very speedy recovery! She is adorable!
OMG, I am so sorry to hear that she had this happen....I know it is scary for you, she is such a little one, but she will be ok, and like the others have said, once they do the surgery, , and the pain is under control, she will be walking with the cast, and prob. trying to run with it on...Mt friends dog did that, and they had to see the vet once a week to change the cast, not sure why, maybe because of fast growth of dog?....But he was just fine...Please give Lily and you hugs and good vibes from your friends here in Florida, and keep us informed as to her condition and progress...I will say a little prayer for Lily tonight...Cheryl
