When you posted the pic saying his adult coat is already coming in, I just want to clarify something--the puppy coat can change color--a lot--so having a new color come in is not the adult coat coming in--many breeds are born a totally different color than what they end up as---and that is true for many doodles too. But you can see that the amount of waves etc is not changing and that these hairs are attached to what was already there....with the adult coat, it will grow in and might be wavier--and the hairs come in as the puppy hairs FALL OUT. Some of those puppy hairs get caught up in the new adult coat and cause more matting at that age than later in the dog's life.

Thanks for clarifying Ginny! I wasn't sure if her adult coat was coming in... it looked like it maybe was at the time (to me lol) but I didn't realize that the puppy coat could change color that drastically - from all chocolate brown (except the white patch on her chest) to a white/silver color on some of her coat, mostly up and down her spine. I have notice that she has lightened up a bit - I was told this would happen but not to the point of dark brown turning white/silver.

Again thanks for your response, I appreciate you sharing knowledge on this subject

We use LesPooches flexible slicker brushes and a steel comb on Ned. I recently bought a Magic Coat Flexible slicker and steel comb with rotting tines that I'm trying on all three. It goes through the coat easier, but we will see if it really gets to the skin. We also use a Chris Christensen pin brush on Charlie and Clancy. for specific mats, we use Cowboy Magic ( vasoline like salve) - rub it into the mat, wait then brush and comb.

Magic Coat products are really cheap, so worth trying. LesPoochs and Chris Christensen are expensive, but if one of those brushes is best with your dog's coat, the high price is WELL worth it. LesPoochs and Chris Christensen are high quality brands.

A technique called LINE BRUSHING is really the way to go. There are videos that show how to do it.  Google YouTube Line Brushing Sully - there are several, but part one is the line brushing.

Katie, Chocolate doodles have the most color change - some stay fairly dark, some turn milk chocolate brown, some turn reddish brown, some turn into a more silver or gray.  It is very fun.

Nancy... Thanks for all the info! I will check out YouTube tutorial!

It sure is fun watching/waiting for the change and now that you mention the coat change... it brings back memories of a Lhasa poo that I had as a young girl. She obviously wasn't a doodle but she was a poodle mix;) she went from looking just like a Lhasa apso with stick straight shiny black coat to super fleece curly coat that almost never matted

FUN!
