Sending prayers your way!
Hey guys - thank you so, so much for all your thoughts, prayers, and support! Poor Lucy! I cannot imagine how scared she is, loose in a strange area. I can't get her out of my head for a minute. Friday night, in the two hours she was at my house, I was feeling so hopeful that we would be able to draw her out of her fear. She ate dinner (who can resist Orijen mixed with grass-fed beef?), displayed some interest in Callie, was brave enough to wander a bit through the downstairs of my place, and laid down. Then, around 10pm, we entered the full contact sport that is getting this girl leashed. She was amazingly evasive, but I finally got it on her. HOWEVER - I evidently didn't click the leash on her collar correctly, because as soon as we had one foot out the door, she bolted, and I still had the leash in my hand, empty. For hours she was right around my street, and there were about 10 of my neighbors outside trying to help me catch her. We never could get close enough to even make a flying tackle. Around 3am we completely lost sight of her (I'd tried to tackle her, she ran and skidded on a metal plate, which made a loud booming noise and completely freaked out and bolted into a wooded area. I searched in there, but couldn't go very deep as it was the kind of pitch black that flashlights barely help). At that point, we printed out some posters and hung them all around. I got a call around 6:45 saturday morning with a sighting. I immediately went out to find her but had no success. We did a lot of searching, driving around, hanging and handing out flyers but we received no other calls from people who had seen Lucy.
As I'm sure y'all can imagine, I'm a hot mess. I'm so worried about Lucy, and while I intellectually know it was an accident and wasn't my "fault", it is certainly my responsibility. I feel like I've re-defined "foster failure" in a very terrible way. Lucy hasn't known any happiness in her life. She was forcibly bred and then turned in to die at what might be the killingest high kill shelter in the country. The wonderful DRC volunteers saved her and doodle trained her so she could have a better life, and instead of hanging out in my air conditioning and learning how to "speak doodle" and getting treatment for her ear infection and heartworms she is lost. It was wickedly hot and humid all weekend, followed up by terrible thunderstorms last night. All of the signs we hung are ruined, so I'm buying plastic sleeves to put them in and will re-hang them. There are some good water sources around, so she should be decently hydrated, but I'm sure she's hungry. She must be so scared! Animal Control has now been out 3 times but they are in the same boat. They can't place their humane traps if we don't have any idea where she is.
I have to call out and appreciate my fellow DRC members. From the minute I called in, they sprang into action and by midday on Saturday the flyer had been sent to every shelter and rescue in Atlanta, all over facebook, and even hitting news station sites. Additionally, they are being wonderful emotional support for me (because like I said, I'm a mess and haven't slept, and would pretty much sell my mother for a xanax)
My entire community has been AMAZING as well...with neighbors not only searching for Lucy with me well into the night, but printing flyers, posting them, wading through the creek and woods, driving around, and being incredibly supportive. I do not lack for any helping hands...I just wish that we knew where she was. It is so worrisome that she's not been sighted...this isn't a 10lb dog...she's a nearly 70lb goldendoodle.
With apologies for this long tirade, I want to close by placing blame. Although I can't imagine I'll ever not feel guilty about this, I am FIRMLY placing the blame on the people who kept Lucy in a pen, had her raped for profit, and beat her (this dog was abused, and probably by using a leash. She wasn't unfamiliar with leashes like some puppy mill dogs...she was quakingly terrified of it), turned her into a feral dog who is scared of people, and then sent her to a shelter to die. Those are the people who put Lucy on this path. I'm angry at myself, but even angrier at the "breeder".
Frannie, this is not your fault. I believe it was Linda (Linda, Webber and Seda) that once told me guilt is a useless emotion....
I spent some time with poor Lucy on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday and Friday.....She was almost in a catatonic state she was so terrified. Frannie is correct, that girl does not like a leash. She is not comfortable with humans at all and much prefers another canine to be with her. I do not however believe that she was beat as she is not hand shy in the least. I have petted, hugged and kissed her doodle nose. I do think she had never seen the outside of a cage or had any human contact. I do not think that the place where she came from shows enough attention to these girls to give them any physical contact good or bad.
YES, this is the so called breeders fault...this girl is sick and frightened. I have to believe that you will find her Frannie and when you do she is going to take a hell of a lot of rehabilitation but I know it can be done and I know there is a very special doodle in there. I know because I was already in love with her, Linda was already in love with her, my entire vet's office loves her...she is special and she will be found.
I am sending ONLY positive energy to you Frannie and to Lucy.
I did contact the vet this morning...hoping she is still wearing her rabies tag ..it is their phone number on the tag and they are on alert for anyone that may get their hands on her and call them.
All paws crossed.
Thank you Frannie for everything you are doing to find her.
