I don''t have a odg with this but I came across this site with a reference to a group for people whose dogs have this condition. You may have already found it. SLO
from what I read up on this is a autoimmune disease in dogs where there nails fall off and become infected...very painfull and sounds like the foot could have to be amputated. YUCK....
Yes, my dog does have it. I am sure it was very painful for her. It has an onset of age 3-8 and comes on quick. She was playing and jumped off the sofa onto a marble floor and snapped two of them and that started a month long process of losing toe nails weekly, fungal and bacterial tests and then finally had to have one toenail declawed with bone and sent to a pathalogy lab in Canada. Canadian customs wouldn't release it for about 8 weeks to the path lab which was another problem, but finally it was diangnosed. She had been on all the meds for 2 months at that point. Her nails are all growing well and is on antiobiotics for another 2 weeks before we start weaning her from those and niacin. She will stay on Vit E and fish oils for life. The vet has never had a case here in Hong Kong before and said she has read that it can come back after antibiotics are stopped. If so she will be on antibiotics for life or steroids. Of course, our vet would prefer to do a low dosage of antibiotics than the steroids.
Did you get a health guarantee when you bought there? Maybe having your money returned would help you with the cost of the treatment. I would be concerned if I was looking into getting another puppy that could have the same thing dependant on what the parentage is.
Oh I am so, so sorry about Zuzu. This sounds similar to Lupus, the human autoimmune disease. My aunt lost a 20 year battle with it last year.
We are thinking of you. I hope the antibiotics work and you can slow down its progression.
