Mats

[Breanne, Dave & Maizy!]

So my Maizy (11 months old) has a beautiful coat however she has a lovely habit of rubbing her head/ears against the couch after she eats. Weird I know... Her ears are completely matted. I have tried to brush them out using ice on ice detangler and nothing is helping. What kind of brush should I be using? I am afraid the groomer will have to shave her down to fix this matting issue.

I use a matt buster type of razor comb, it does not have long blades but short blades that your can control a bit more.  I use the Ice on Ice detangler and it helps.  My Sasha after eating wipes her face along my dining room wall !!! - LOL.  If you have a good comb you can start at the bottom of the matt and work your way up coming out little by little.

Also, in case you aren't aware, your Maizy is in her prime time for coat change so you must stay on top of her brushing  even more than normal or you will end up with a shaved dog.  Do some searches on the Les Poochs brush (which I highly recommend as well) and also a search in the grooming group on line brushing).  Both will be a tremendous help.  If you aren't familiar with the coat change do some searching on that as well.

Yep...Your Maizy and my Bexter are the same age...I almost got my doodle out of that litter actually!  But in the end, I didn't want to have the puppy shipped - too far away!  Anyway...We are currently going through this with Bexter.  It is a rough time, and I hope it ends soon.  I use the Ice on Ice too & brush and comb him every other day.  Even in that time, it is almost like starting all over, but I do think he is fairly mat-free.  My mistake before was I would brush him but didn't comb him.  I thought his hair was perfect...until I tried getting a comb through it.  The top felt perfect, but underneath (close to the skin) there were mats!  He has been to the groomers once so far, and he was a real mess, but they worked with him all day & did not shave him.  I told them DO NOT shave him no matter what.  I even worked with him for 4 hours the day before the appointment trying to get out as many as I could.  I am going to buy a Les Pooch brush - so far just using a slicker & comb.  I am hoping the Les Pooch saves time and works better!  Good luck.
