My mom had to take her pup to the emergency vet last night. She thought he ate a daffodil and he was throwing up and then was lethargic. After doing toxin tests they came up negative but his platelets are pretty low. They are keeping him for now to do another blood panel. Any thoughts? Mom is really upset and my daughter had leukemia so you know where our minds are headed.
Thanks for any information.

Sending good thoughts.. Animals usually steer clear of daffodils.

No advice  but we have had a recent experience with a  similar diagnosis.  My niece's senior mixed-breed dog had profound bleeding last month. After a few days of treatment she responded wonderfully and is home snoozing with her mom.  Could be could be many many things that give results of a low platelet count.

I'm sure the vet will help your mom figure it all out.  Dont think the worst just yet.

Do keep us updated, Jenn

I agree with Joanne; there are many reasons that a platelet count could be low, don't let your minds go to the worst reasons. Sending positive thoughts. :)

Sending pawsitive thoughts your way!

I think she said normal range was 200-500 and he was at 122.
Enzo had a complete blood panel done few weeks ago. It was part of her medicall pkg. offered from the Vet. Her Platelets came back at 121,000..... Normal for an ADULT is 143-448( thousands). But a note at the bottom of the work up says "1) she is still young @ 21 months and 2) scanning of the blood smear revealed adequate Platelet numbers. Due to clumping, the automated Platelet number cannot be accurately determined."
We too, were completely freaked out. My husband has a extremely low Platelet count ( 12,000 @ last CBC run last week).
He has Drs. completely stumped and is on no medication or gets no blood transfusions. He's been the subject of many a Round Table at Cancer Centers across the country.
Oh man. I hope your husband is ok.
Thanks Jenn. 25 years ago, Drs. at MD Anderson in Houston, told me he had 6 months to live. Just goes to show you, Drs. don't know everything. He rarely gets sick, he continues to clot when cut or scratched. If you were to see him...he looks very healthy. His counts just suck! He's been in the National Bone Marrow Registry for years...no donor has ever been found. Our son is the closest match and that is at 50%. We seen Drs. at Stanford, John Hopkins, MD Anderson...and none of the experts have a clue. They can't even give a name to what ails him. They are reluctant to treat him with anything, for fear of upsetting whatever it is in his body that keeps him going. For whatever it is, his body has learned to deal and react appropriately.

Sending wishes for a full recovery.

Pup is back home with mom. She said he is acting normal. She has a follow up with our vet on Friday. I'm wondering if some plant he got into contained anticoagulant properties and killed off some platelets. I know that cell line is one of the fastest to regenerate so we will see. Thanks for the well wishes. Ill keep you updated.
Hoping for great counts!

Hope all is well....I think it's natural for our minds to go to the worst case scenario.  Hoping for good news!
