My 15 month old has been on Frontline all along.  He went to the groomer on Friday and she pointed out some red "bites" near his tail and hind leg.  She said that Frontline doesn't protect them from mosquitos and I said then why did my vet (where she works also) only suggest Frontline when I got him in May and he went through the summer and now he's getting eaten alive.  Of course, she didn't know why but suggested K-9 Advantix and I wondered if anyone likes this product or can recommend aonther for mosquitos and other summer bugs.

Thanks.

I've never used anything for mosquitoes or other summer bugs other than fleas or ticks. The flea and tick products don't repel the insects, they die after they bite the dog, so I don't see how K9 Advantix would prevent the dog from getting bitten. And mosquitoes just bite, they don't infest a dog.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes, but the HW preventatives don't keep them from getting bitten either, it just keeps them from developing HW.

Are you sure the bites you saw aren't from biting flies? That seems more likely and more common than mosquitoes.

I haven't seen any biting flies in our yard.  We've all been bitten by mosquitos.  I wonder then why K-9 Advantix states that it reples and kills mosquitos??
Frontline does not "repel" anything, it only kills after a flea or tick bites. All spot-ons work the same way. Try Cedarcide (cedarcide.com) it repels all bugs and is safe, even for people. There are several discussions about flea and tick killers here on DK.
Really??? I had no idea that they would still be bit!  I have to do some reading now.  So essentially are you saying that a flea could be ON Hunter, come into my house and still be alive and not die unless it bites her?  Eeeewwwww
Same with ticks. If they fall off the dog and bite you, you get the Lyme Disease. My son and I both had it when my dogs were on Frontline. There has even been some talk lately of the Frontline being ineffective, for several reasons. I use the Cedarcide and Diatomaceous Earth and have been off the spot-ons for 3 years, now.

In early summer, BB had a lot of funny blood marks on his belly that we thought were a red permanent marker (they wouldn't wash off). They looked like this: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_al... Google searches for very odd strings of words "blood belly bites" etc, came up with similar images to what he had (above) and we seem to have drawn the conclusion that they are "black flies". We always notice them at night right before bed, after his "dusk time" potty break. They usually are almost entirely gone by the next morning. He hasn't gotten them much int he past month or so that we have noticed. He always got them by his privates where his hair is the thinnest.

We're on K9 Advantix though we've still pulled many a tick off in the past few months (him and us, BLEGH!) We just mvoed to a less rural area, and hopefully wont have much of a problem any longer.

Actually the K9 Advantix does claim to repel pretty much everything (including mosquitos). We don't have fleas or ticks where we live (but do have mosquitos right now) But we are going to the coast with Stella in 3 weeks where there are fleas and ticks. We got some K9 Adavantex to put on her before we go. I will let you know how it works!
Does anyone know why Frontline Plus is now ineffective? My vet swears by this?
That puzzles me , too. Both Jack's vet and his specialist recommend frontline, and it seems to do the job for us.
