Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My baby Penny is an 11 week old Standard F1b golden doodle. She has been the best addition to our home and we are completely in love with her! Recently on Monday she jumped off our bed and injured her back right leg. I could kick myself for putting her up there in the first place but I turned my back for 5 seconds and off she went. This dog has absolutely no fear.

I took her to our vet, at the time, immediately after the jump to make sure nothing was broken or seriously injured. They examined her and took X-rays. I was told it was most likely a "strain" or "sprain" and sent home with anti-inflammatories and instructions to have her rest and bring her back in a week if there was no improvement. I was very skeptical and after 3 days of observing my puppy limp and basically use only 3 of her legs to walk, I had a gut feeling something was not right. I had been in contact with a wonderful trainer that was previously scheduled to come begin training with Penny and reached out to her for a suggestion of someone I could take her to for a second opinion. I made an appointment immediately and went yesterday to have her seen.

This new vet was absolutely amazing and was extremely diligent in doing multiple x-ray views of Penny's leg which allowed him to see that the leg was, as I had feared, fractured. To be more exact she has a fractured tibia. She will have to have surgery to correct this fracture since she is so young they do not want to splint her leg for fear of messing with her growth plates which could ultimately stunt the growth of her leg and cause life long problems.

Needless to say this new mama is absolutely TERRIFIED! I am reaching out to see if anyone has experienced a fracture in their adult or puppy doodle? Can you give me any advice as far as recovery, tips to try and get her to rest off the leg (she's a puppy this is almost impossible!), really anything to help ease my fears. I worry that keeping her cooped up will interfere with her socialization and her personality in general. I meet with her surgeon in 2 days to discuss her procedure and recovery, but any advice or support anyone could give me in the mean time would be extremely appreciated!

I feel like the worst dog mother in the world right now for allowing this to happen to my sweet Penny. I realize accidents happen with puppies and dogs in general, but I can't help but blame myself. The only upside to this is that Penny appears to be in no pain. She is still very happy and playful and shows no signs of hurting if we have to touch her leg. Even when the most recent vet examined her, he stated that he was impressed with how she showed no signs of discomfort other than her limping. We have been limiting her activity as much as humanly possible by carrying her to potty and spending time with her in a large pen that I purchased to limit the area she can walk. It has been a serious challenge, she's a puppy and just wants to run and play as she should be.

I just want my girl to be ok, and could really use some advice from other doodle owners! Thank you in advance for any feedback you can give!

I know of a doodle of a similar age who jumped out of her owner's arms and broke her leg--she had a cast and was healed and fine in 6 weeks with no surgery and no lasting issues. But I have no idea if it was a similar issue--sounds like you will have a challenge keeping her quiet, but you are a good momma and will handle it--just follow the vet's instructions and in no time, she will be running around again!
