Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I'm very sorry if this has added before (I'm very new) but we just adopted a goldendoodle. The first couple of days he was very shy and mostly was in his kennel. Then he wanted to be with the family but was still very mellow. One trip to the vet later and we find out he has a stomach bug and fleas! So my question is, are golden doodle puppies always this mellow or is it because he's not feeling good?

Also we think he's going to look like an old man because of these facial hairs, thought?

When you say "adopted", do you mean you got the pup from a rescue/shelter? A private rescue/shelter should have treated the fleas prior to adopting him out.  If you purchased from a breeder, I'd certainly be in touch with them on the flea issue, if not the stomach bug as well.

There's a big difference between "shy" and "mellow"; the former can be an indication that the pup wasn't well socialized. In my experience, very few puppies are truly mellow, especially sporting breed puppies, so his being quiet could be an indication that he isn't feeling well.

The beard will grow in much fuller.

We bought him from a breeder, his stomach bug has cleared up. How would I socialize him to be less shy if thats whats going on?

Once he has all of his shots, take him lots of places - restaurants, parks, shops, walk by traffic and schools, etc.- wherever you can think to go.  Before he has all of his shots, you can carry him places (just don't put him down).

My Webster was and is a major mellow fellow.  He has never moved when we sweep or vacuum, unless we tell him to move.  We would take him to parks at 4 months old and strangers couldn't believe he was that young because he was so calm.  He was very well socialized, the Home Depot and Lowes people knew him by name.  Maybe you just have a mellow fellow also :-)

I agree with everything Nancy said. My older doodle is very shy/laid back/mellow and gets a little anxious when meeting new people so we work a lot with that. I try to take them everywhere with me and when I do take my older one for long walks I try to walk through busy parts of town so he gets used to the noise and lots of strange people wanting to pet him.
