I posted this in the dog grooming group too...Hi Tori was groomed yesterday and although y groomer did an awesome job with her cut - especailly with the amount of thick matting she had to deal with, she has some raw spots. I asked her not to shave her butt area. She said she would use a scissor cut. But I guess she was so mated there, that she said she had to shave it. She said she used a new top to her razor so it wouldn't irritate her as much... well here goes my question (finally). Tori is so sore that when she pees (she hasn't pooped yet), she sits down to try and soothe it. She just sits around. No jumping or running to us when we come in the room like usual. The top of the underside of her tail by her butt area had to also be shaved. She looks like she has razor bump burn. Is there anything I can put on it to soothe it for her. I feel sooo bad! Do you think it really had to be cut that low? I'm so upset right now....
My dog has had mats galore. I always use scissors to cut them out if I have to and he never has been sore. I make sure to keep something, usually my fingers, next to his skin so I don't cut him. I would put a little trile antibiotic ointment on Tori and rub it in well but gently. That should help prevent infection and be soothing
Like bacitracin or neosporin???? She keeps licking it to try and soothe it, poor baby!!! You guys are great! So quick to SOOOOOOTHE us sad mommies and come to the rescue of our doodles! THANKS!!!
Yes, I just get the generic triple antibiotic ointment. A little hydrocortisone cream would also help. Try to keep her from licking it until most of it is absorbed.
You also need something to coat it or to protect it like vaseline...it has a natural healing agent in it too and will coat the skin so it will not sting if she pees or poops. Poor thing...when will these groomers get it together.
I know.. she's so pitiful! She just keeps looking at me, like what the heck did you let them do/ The thing that gets me, is that usually this groomer is so terrific, and I specifically said NOT to do that... why is it that they feel b/c THEY think they HAVE to, that it makes it alright to go ahead and do it anyway???? I put on the Neosporin. Seemed to help a bit, but everytime she gets up to kind of play, she runs back to her pillow. She did immediately try and lick it, but I tried to hold her head and blew on it to dry it quickly, but she wouldn't let me do that for too long. Reminds me of post natal birthing pain! AH!
This happened with my poodle years ago. I took her to the vet and was given a powder to use on the area. The vet told me that they absolutely could not use clippers or shavers on her...she had to be hand scissored. I found a groomer who was able and willing to do it, and I am still using that groomer 8 years later.
My vet gave me a spray for Jack's perianal area when he gets irritated back there from his occasional anal gland problems. It dries really fast. Maybe you could try to find something like that OTC.
I hope Tori feels better soon.
Thanks so much Karen! I am going to call him tomorrow morning. Actually the groomer told me to put on powder, but... was even thinking of baking soda??? I know that helps w/ a lot - just recently read about it stopping bleeding on a nail. I don't know. She has her moments of activeness, but she is really bothered by this. I am going to INSIST next time - no more clippers or shaving. No matter what. I will just have to try and check out that area better next time. and of course bring her more frequently.... darn fun in the snow! lol
I have this rub call Hemp Butt Cream for Dogs. I bought at our local Health Food store. It is like Bag Balm but smells like Lavender and other nice smelling oils. I used it when Jordan got raw and on her paws before I switched her food when they got dry. I know you can use Bag Balm on dogs as well.
