While I wait for the Vet to call back I thought I would get my DK friends opinion/advice.  Sorry if this is long-Snickers had his yearly vaccinations on Friday, (please no debates on vaccines vs non vaccines) He was understandably a bit tired Friday and had a sore rump where they had done the shots.  On Saturday he was still lethargic but ate fine, did his business fine and played later in the afternoon (according to my DH as I was not home).  On Sunday he woke up and was very excited to see me as I had a wedding the previous day and got home late and just said hello really quickly to him the night before. So he was really excited/jumping etc and all of sudden just started hacking something terrible, at first I thought he was going to throw up, but he didn’t-but these hacks racked his whole body.  Then as soon as it started it was over-Monday he was fine.  Then this morning he wakes up and same thing excited to see us and starts hacking and hacking until the biggest glob of mucus comes up-I mean it was A LOT-he then seemed tired but he ate his breakfast and settled into his morning routine (which is a quick nap before his long walk with Dad).  So….is this a reaction to the vaccination? Something else? He has never had this issue before (though he did have Kennel Cough twice when he was puppy which had the hacking but no mucus)  Any insight most appreciated.

I don't know.. but I hope you get answers soon.. Poor Baby....
Vaccine reactions are usually within the first hour of the shot. You may have some lethargy, soreness or fever later, but this sounds more like kennel cough.
This does not sound like a vaccination reaction to me. Maybe he's getting kennel cough or an allergic reaction. Last year Calla had something like this, no mucus though. She was fine when I took her to the vet, of course. The vet thought it might be an allergy. Is he scratching. Ragweed season is here.

I don't know if it works this way for dogs, but I think that humans sometimes get mild flu-like symptoms after they get flu shots. If Snickers got his bordatella vaccine on Friday, maybe this could be the same type of thing?

At any rate, I hope the vet can give you some good advice and Snickers will be feeling better soon!

Karen that is what I was thinking too. They said to just watch him today and make sure he is eating drinking doing his business. He went to Daycare 2 days before he got his vaccines but has not been to the park or daycare since. Don't think itnis allergies as he is already on allergy meds and they work well. Just a wait and see-vet did say if the mucus is colored then come in as it could be a secondary infection. Hubby is home today ( thank goodness for consulting gigs) so he is keeping an eye out. Thanks
For the thoughts/insights.

It seems odd that if it were kennel cough the symptoms would only be once a day and then two days apart. Strange... Has Snickers been to dog parks or day care...anywhere he could have been exposed to it?  Did he receive a Bordetella vaccine on Friday? I think they can cause some minor symptoms of the disease if they are live viruses.

Whatever it turns out to be I hope it's not serious! Feel better soon buddy!
How is Snickers doing tonight? Did the vet have any ideas about what is causing his cough?
Update: it is definitely Kennel Cough vet thinks he might have got exposed at Daycare on Wed then Friday when he got his shots his immune system couldnt handle the exposure and the vaccine and just like that be has a nasty version of Kennel cough. He was given a cough suppressant which has worked well and antibiotics so it doesn't turn into a secondary infection. He is just so lethargic I have NEVER seen him this mellow. However he has an appetite and is drinking so hopefully he will be back to his normal self soon. Lesson we learned? Limit exposure daycare/boarding/dog park the week of vaccines. Guess lesson learned. Thanks everyone for your good wishes and advice.
Glad you got an answer and it's something easily treated. Hoping Snickers will be feeling perfectly fine very soon!
I'm sorry Snickers has kennel cough and hope he will be feeling remarkably better soon. That is such an interesting discovery about the vaccines and exposure to a virus. Good information.
I hope Snickers feels better quick!
