Camus' claw is bleeding profusely, at least I think it is his claw and the pet stores are closed.  Does anyone have a home remedy to stop the bleeding?

The cornstarch stopped the bleeding - I put his whole paw in a bowl of it, but this paw has been problematic for Camus, it has a cutaneous horn pushing the claw that was bleeding out at a strange angle, was the paw that he broke the bone in, and a few weeks ago he it was badly swollen, so the vet gave him an injection of antibiotics followed up with a 10-day course of oral antibiotics and daily soaks.  So I am going to  call the vet in the morning to see if I should have it checked.  I cannot be sure if it was due to his nails being clipped or because of having been cut by a shard from a broken terracotta planter.  When we got home I opened the gate and he ran in before I noticed that someone had knocked over a planter by banging into the fence.

Will he let you apply pressure with a towel or gauze pads until it stops and you can see what you are dealing with?

I think Linda's sugestion is the best one as long as there isn't something lodged there causing the bleeding.

I hope it stops.  It is midnight and I need to sign off..

If it is the nail, you can use cornstarch to stop the bleeding.

Thank you Karen, the cornstarch worked!

Thank you everyone.  He does not mind pressure being applied and never even whimpered, but he didn't make a sound when he broke the bone in his paw (last year) either.  I just saw blood everywhere he was walking.  I soaked it briefly in water and put a sock on to try and contain the blood but he bled through 2 socks!  I'm going to try cornstarch.  Thanks for the quick response - trying to keep Camus quiet and blood at bay made it difficult to search prior discussions.  Thanks again

Thie may sound really crazy and will be extremely hard to do with a doodle but if you can find the source and it is a cut in the pad and isnt to deep but deep enough it wont stop you can squeeze it shut and apply crazy glue to hold it togather. it is what they do now for emergency cases that dont need stitches but wont scab over for humans. but if you can get it to stop squeeze some antibiotic ointment on it pack it with gauze or cotton balls then wrap the paw in gauze or paper towel and medical tape it up leaving the nails and some of the front toes open. you may need to tape up higher then you think as dogs are very crafty at removing and eatting bandages. I will be on until 7 am est if you need any help let me know.

Thank you for the emergency info Bob.

your very welcome.

If it is a claw I have heard of using flour which would be similar to using baking soda. Fill a baggie with the flour and put the paw inside for anywhere from 5-30 minutes. Good luck!

Thank you Ricky.

Chewie's claws bled twice before. I took him to the vets both times (it was during the day)

First time, I clipped a bit too much off his back toe nails. He bled profusely. Took him to the vet who stopped the blood with some yellowish powder (called something like Kwik Stop or EZ stop). I decided to buy one to keep at home after the incident.

Second time, he caught his dew claw on the pavement while playing fetch. Used the yellow powder, but still took him to the vet as his claw was torn quite significantly.
