Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about when is it safe to neuter dogs. I have heard many opinions and read some articles on line and I am very confused. Our vet said between 5-6 months is fine, the trainer says after 8 months, I've read some article that we should wait at least 2 years, I've read another article that said we should never spay or neuter an animal just make sure to not allow them to have encouners, I know a lady who has a labradoodle that was neutered by the breeder at 8 weeks old, rescue centers fix their animals at young age. I mean, it is really confusing. Any ideas? Thank you.

We have discussed this, any times and there are sound reasons for all opinions except for ever spaying or neutering I think. Do a search on the main page for early spay and neutering and you should ind a lot of information. My Luca was neutered by about 10 weeks and Calla around 4 months. At 5 and 4 years respectively they are fine but that doesn't prove much.

Never not ever

Right of course.

To me, never spaying or neutering a dog would not be an option, ever.

For very large & giant breeds, particularly males, I do think it is better to wait until their bone growth is complete, which can take 18 months, but there are not many doodles who fit that category. I think it's safe to spay most female doodles around 5-6 months of age, but I think I would wait a bit longer with a large male. Not two years, though.

I don't think there is any concensus on this issue. There are pros and cons for all of the options.

Just Neuter! Believe me, by 6-8 months you won't even wonder why.

I was going to me my 2 cents but it seems as Marta is no longer a member!!!  I wonder what happened.
