Okay, well, I think I am taking the plunge and getting a new boy.  I know,  I know, I know....

What did you all do in this situation adding another that kept the new boy safe?  i.e. Stop taking current one to dog parks? Keep current one always groomed so as not to spread fleas, stuff, etc...?

I am thinking of what changes I should prepare my Oscar and me for to welcome the new boy and keep him safe from stuff!  At least in the first several months that the puppy doesn't have all his shots?

Nervous mom again!!!

Well Congratulations on your decision, sometimes thats the hardest part. As for keeping the older one safe, Im not sure Im understanding your question, but Im a little sleep deprived today. I didn't do anything especially different. The older one had all his shots and was otherwise very healthy, so the puppy was safe with him. He had flea preventative anyway so there was never a concern there and the pup got hers as soon as possible. Grooming more wont stop fleas, even short haired dogs can get fleas. As a matter of fact, our pup did bring home some fleas from the plane ride, but since the older dog was already treated, it wasn't a risk to him. Just a pain to clean the whole house, and spray the yard and then bug bomb the house for a weekend.
I did avoid the dog park, with the older dog, but mostly because it just made sense, but we don't go that often anyway so no real change there. We didn't need to take ours for walks as we have a big yard, but I would avoid walks with the puppy until he's had shots anyway
Keeping their food bowls separate and them not eating each others food took a day or two of training, but that was pretty easy. Especially if you use a crate. Other than that, I'd watch their playing to be sure it doesn't get too rough as the older dog will outweigh the puppy for awhile. My older one did seem to realize just how far he could push it and of course the puppy would yelp if it got too rough, but there is the possibility of the bigger one hurting the smaller by accident. And lastly making sure the puppy toys would be safe for the older one too. No soft stuffed animals here, that's for sure. You'll do fine Im sure.

No, I meant keeping the new boy safe, the younger one.

what do you mean with the yard spray?????

We sprayed insecticide in the yard for fleas when the puppy had them.
