Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello,

Well after months of research my wife and I decided to add a GoldenDoodle to our family. We had to put our last dog down as due to him becoming extremely aggressive in his older years (we had a maltise). I have a few questions I am hoping  you all can provide some insight on. Our Goldendoodle is a 10 week old male and we have had him for 5 days now. I am crate training him, with a bell. We have a reception bell by our door and before I take him out I say "potty" and then take his paw and ring the bell, then I immediately take him outside. If he does his business he gets a treat.

So my question:

1. Have any of you tried the bell and been successful?

2. How long does it typically take for the potty training to take?

3. Our dog seems to be "lazy", when we take him for short walks I practicality have to drag him..he often stops and lays down out of nowhere. He also does this when I try to take him out to do his business, specifically when I get to the door he does not want to go out, however as soon as I "drag/push" him through the doot he then proceeds the area to do his business. My question, is this normal or should I be concerned?

4. How old should he be before I can expect him to hold it through the night? Should I still be taking him out at 1 am when he starts whining or just ignore it?

5. Any other advice would be appreciated

He is adorable! Welcome to the wonderful world of doodles. My experience with potty training dates back 11 years. I have to say we were consistent and probably lucky in that it didn't take too long. As far as leash walking, I do think your guy is not unlike most pups. I remember Teddy laying in the grass too during a short walk, this too shall pass. Remember he is a baby,  it will take time and  patience but so worth it in the end. Enjoy and remember to keep posting questions, you will find a lot of good advice.

Yes, I have been successful with bells.

Potty training takes MONTHS.

Leash stuff sounds normal. Be careful where you walk him while he still has not had all of his vaccinations- parvo is a big threat to puppies as well as other parasites and diseases.

Expect to still be taking him out in the middle of the night for at least 2-3 more weeks (every dog is different). Try taking up water about 3 hours before bedtime- that should help :)

Gus Gus responded to the bell eventually. Works great now. Be patient and yes he needs to go out in the middle of the night for a while longer. It stinks and seems to go on for ever but it stops soon enough. As for walks and potty. He just doesn't get it yet but he will. As a previous poodle and golden retriever lab owner, You've got to have one smart breed. Just like most guys he's young and dumb right now ha!
I bet he will come around and be the best friend ever
Welcome Patrick, how long it takes to potty train varies between pups, can be any where from a couple weeks to several months even at that it means taking them out consistently. The bells work great but it could take a few weeks for a young puppy to understand how to use them. We took our pups out a couple times each night when they first came home, rule was if they started whimpering a couple hours since they had been out they probably needed to go out again. What you don't want is a puppy that starts peeing in their crate so it takes diligence, patience and a few sleepless nights, generally the first week is the worst and just gets better from there and they may be sleeping thru the night by that second week. As far as lying down when you walk him or not wanting to go out, I suspect it's just a whole new world for him, been confined with liter mates, etc., for now maybe pick him up and carry him out, I had to do this with one of ours for just a few times before he wanted to bolt out the door. This is all normal puppy stuff that doesn't last very long so hang in there and enjoy that adorable little guy, he's sooo cute!!
