Hmmm. Illinois. I checked out where you lived on your profile because I don't think it is too unusual for "smart" dogs to want to lie down in the shade when it is hot outside. Mine would walk from tree to tree just to lie in the shade on a warm day. And I had a big F1b goldendoodle who wanted to be carried if his paws got sore. My first two doodles were also trained to pee and poop on command. If he gives you any indication that he wants to go out, I would take him. He is very young for much bladder control. The 1:00 a.m. potty trips don't last for too long.
