Well, Tori vomited twice today and had watery stool, so bad it had blood in it. I feel SO AWFUL!!! Thank you to everyone for their help with what I thought was her pancreatitis acting up again. All this time I thought her problem was due to her food issues. We (all 4 of us) brought her to the animal emergency hospital. They did tests and took an x-ray and said that she swallowed A SCREW!!! I have NO idea at all how she could have POSSIBLY even gotten a screw, much less swallow it! She's NEVER left alone any where where she would have access to one. I feel like a terrible mommy! She's sleeping over night on IV fluids and antibiotic (and treating her for heartworm - as preventative...???). We're PRAYING the screw will move along. It's in her intestines, and eventually come out and she won't need surgery! I'm telling you this dog has had so many issues in her little life! I'm sooooo upset!!! Keep your fingers crossed for us! I'll keep you informed!
Thanks so much to both of you! I can't even sleep. I'm so upset! I can't for the life of me figure out how or WHY she could eat a screw! He said it's about 1 cm long. I just searched all over to see if something came apart in the house, but nothing..... I'm saying my prayers! Thanks again!!!
Thanks for your good wishes. She's really never outside alone, but nothing's impossible. I spoke to the vet this morning. They said it only moved a little. The intestinal swelling and gas is down so they think it's still not doing any physical damage, but... She's really just been sitting in the crate. I would assume the lack of movement isn't helping her digestive track with moving it along. They are going to give her food soon and see if that helps! I am soooo hoping it does. Besides the issue of costly surgery, I hate to think of them going into her INTESTINE!!! They tell me it's pretty common surgery in veterinarian medicine. Hopefully it will come out on it's own. I will keep you posted! Thanks!!
It's not your fault, Shelly! Some puppies (mine included) will eat anything! When I was a teenager our family had a collie who escaped from our yard, ran down to the nearby beach and somehow managed to swallow an entire bamboo meat skewer. The vet was able to remove it and she was fine in no time. Our neighbor's dog swallowed a tampon which became impacted (again removed by the vet via a small incision).
So, even worse case scenario it will be fine! But, amazing things like bones find a way to usually pass right through the intestines like bones and sticks, so there is a good chance that it will continue to move through her intestines.
It IS amazing what CAN make it through their systems, as you said Leslie. My friend's doodle pooped crayons, legos, everything her little ones left around at the time. How scared and helpless you must feel though right now, and frustrated because nothing was lying around.
We're praying for you and Tori. Don't beat yourself up over it (dogs eat anything..I'm sure everyone on here has a story of something their pup got into), just keep giving Tori lots of love!
Oh my God Shelly, I hope Tori is going to be alright. Hang in there. She may have had quite a few issues in her short life, but I KNOW she's tough and she's going to get through this too. This is definitely NOT your fault. I know she's like her brother and he too picks up EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME. There is no way you can keep her in your sights 24/7 This is just stuff that happens. Keep us posted, we'll say a prayer for Tori.
