Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I posted this to the Jersey Doodles group and someone suggested that it was important info to share with the larger group....
Ok - So, I was googling around looking for information on dogs and ocean swimming in anticipation of the upcoming Beach Romp and I came across this article:
http://www.petinsurance.com/healthzone/pet-articles/pet-health-toxi...
We went to the Sandy Hook Romp last year and my then 9 month old dog had a blast. I remember seeing that a few of the Doods had diaarhea on the beach and someone remarked that it was just part of the ocean swimming from swalllowing too much salt water. When we headed back to the car - Nelson had a horrible bout of watery diarrhea. I didn't think much of it because of the comment I heard on the beach from the more experienced rompers.. I had given him fresh water on the beach but he wasn't very interested, he just wanted to play.
After reading this article, I realize that this could have very quickly become something more serious. Had I googled it last year, I would have taken him to the vet. ( I am a nurse , so I understand the physiology but didn't realize it could be so serious in dogs)
It was a fabulous day on the beach with the Doods. I just want everyone to be aware of this and monitor the amount of fresh water that they drink. If Nelson & Rufus go this year, we will have many extra forced water time outs, that's for sure.

I had just heard something about this recently. My friend and I were taking our doodles to Manasquan dog beach and in the beginning they would have diarrhea at times. They were in the water, retrieving balls constantly, swallowing water. We did not go this year and let them swim in her back yard pool instead. When we are at the ocean, they do not swim or chase balls in the ocean, they just dip in the water to cool off and drink fresh water that we bring for them. Thanks for the heads up. Hope to see you at Sandy Hook.
Jersey and Jasmine in pool. They love it!
