Friday at MID-NIGHT as we went to bed, "Monet" had to go out so Tom went out with her and Finnegan & Kozmo...when Monet went running over to the edge of our back yard not barking, the other 2 followed her..then The Spray occured, and sent them all running up the deck....too late they had all been sprayed..
I had heard of the tomatoe juice thing before but of course didnt have an on hand...so I went on the internet and many suggested mixing up hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dish detergent (dawn) but any will do...as soon as possible after spraying to wash the oily substance off their coats ASAP..
Luckily we had a small amt of the HP on hand but noT enough to do all of them....we mixed the baking soda with water and shampoo'd the coats and left on for 20 mins...and rinsed, then they had suggested covering coat with vinegar , leave on for 10 mins, then rinse again , then if still smelly repeat the first steps again....so far most of odor is off....I shouLd say this worked very well..
It was an unpleasant experience to be going through when we had an open house for viewing of our pups the next morning..WITH 7 FAMILIES EXPECTED TO VISIT US....URGGG
I suggest everyone get plenty of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to have on hand in case this ever happens to you in the middle of the night..
I also read "Natures Miracle spunk remover" works but have not purchased it yet...
Any one have any further advice of what worked for them that is different from what we used....
This is Skunk season....people in our neighborhood have these littl sheds in their backyards and I think alot of themfind little homes underneath them....urggg...
Funny (for us, not for you) story. Sorry. Not the thing you want to have happen right before bed. I have had many "Oh crap" moments when the dogs start barking their heads off at midnight thinking a skunk got in the yard. We have yet to be skunked, but I have smelled them release in the neighbourhood. We have both dawn and HP/baking soda in our emergency cubbord.
HAA HAA YES FUNNY now that we have recovered..smart man to haveyour emergency supplies ready on hand..We hope you never have to use them...I really wouldnt wish this experience on anyone...
Oh yes, we have had plenty of skunk experience also. The worst, I think, was when a skunk sprayed through the deck to get our dog. We used plenty of that same skunk spray mixture to clean the underside of the deck and the dog. The dog was definitely easier to do than the deck. My husband also got sprayed on his bicycle. His clothes and the bike cleaned up okay but not the tire. He had to throw it away. We use a bottle (quart size) of Hydrogen Peroxide, to a box of baking soda and a cup of dish soap. Put it all into a pail and have at it. Yes, a good idea for anyone in skunk territory to keep some on hand because skunks tend to be out in the evening.

UGH. I overheard the recipe the last time I was at the vet's. They also had a big note on the page that said, "DO NOT STORE...EXPLOSIVE." Just in case anyone was planning on mixing up a batch to have on hand. How are the doodles today?
THE doodles are dooing great, no smell on thembu the smell has lingered under our bed in our carpet where "Monet" had run to after she was sprayed 2 nights ago. Thanks Monet....I guess I may try sprinl\kling aking soda underneath the bed...its funny , i was soo tired that night I guess my nose had gotten used to the smell & it didnt bother me, then we had the opwn house starting at 10 the next morning & showed pups all day ..then we went out to Mohegan Sun for a few drinks with friends, and again crashed quickly, and today well still have not gotten a chance to sprinkle that baking soda...maybee I can do it now and then light 50 candles in the room ,,ha ha ha....maybe burn the house while I 'm at it , that will rid the house of the skunk smell..
I don't know if this will happen to your dogs-BUT- when I was a teenager, our family dog, a wire haired fox terrior was sprayed in the face by a skunk. We used all of the traditional methods to clean him and he cleaned up really well. BUT-every time he got wet in the rain, he started to stink again. This lasted for about a YEAR!!! The poor guy.
reassuring words of comfort....gotta love your reply...i certainly hope this is not the norm...Oh My word if this is true..so far the smell has been removed ...thank goodness..
We had an Aussie that never learned to leave the darn things alone. At least once a year he'd get skunked. I have tried all the remedies (Massingel is another one that mostly works). The problem is that whenever he would get wet, he'd smell slightly skunky. Fortunately Aussie hair falls out and within a 4 or 5 months the effected fur was all gone.
One time he came running into the garage and 'wiped' himself all over the floor. It left spots that were a heavy greasy vaseline texture. I washed them many times before the garage was usable again. That was years ago. Those spots no longer smell but when I wash the floor the water still beads up on them and they are still visible. I'd sure give that carpet a good scrub.
